Tire wear patterns
Has any one else had Michelin 315 tire wear as described and shown below. I run 115 lbs in both front tires based on actual weight. I have been running 85 in tags also based on weight. Tires are about 5 years old, have about 45,000 miles on them, always been in same positions since installed, pressures have never been run low in any them, have TPMS.
In words:
Right front tire more or less normal wear.
Left front tire wear with about 1/2 ” wide concave ridges and inner and outer edges of tread.
Both tag tires have the same 1/2″ wide concave ridges on inner and outer edges of treads, one tire shown for illustrative purposes.
The odd thing is the wear pattern on the left front tire is similar to the tags, but the right front exhibits flat square edges inner and outer similar to what the drive tires look like except with the expected increased outer and inner rib wear from turning.
Drives are all normal wear. Have Equal in all tires.

That is not an unusual 315 wear pattern, and it is the very reason Michelin changed the tread design on the 365 to use a decoupling groove which has proven to result in a greater problem.
On 315 tires it is important to use the tire pressures from the Michelin inflation charts, but that alone will not stop what looks like extra wear on the outside of 315 tread.

But why is the RF different than the LF, which wears like the tags???
The pressures I run are from the Michelin charts.
I realize there may be no easily identifiable reason. In medicine we just call it idiopathic and deal with it. In this case I think the tires will age out before continuation of this wear pattern causes a problem.

Do you only have a front axle, drive axle and tag axle total weight or do you know the correct weight of each individual position? i.e right front weight, left front weight. If not, you need that info to properly inflate the tires. Heaviest front tire determine pressure for both tires (+5 psi in my opinion). Same applies to drive and tag.

I just used axle weights, did not do each position. Most of the heavy stuff on my conversion is in the back, and I try to load the front bay evenly side to side. As the tire pressures I do have are near max I don’t think there is much room for adjustment of pressures. I said I run 115, but looking back my set point is actually 120 at normal warm weather temps, it is just down to 115 with the cooler weather here.
From my past experience with tires it does not look like toe in/out problem – which will generally affect both sides, camber problem which does not account for both inside and outside edge wear. Also does not fit classic over or under inflation patterns of center or edges respectively worn.
The point Jon made about that is how the 315s wear makes sense on three tires, the weird thing is why is one tire – the right front not matching the pattern?

Improperly adjusted (loose) wheel bearings can cause some unusual wear patterns. Many shops will err on the side of too loose as too tight has its own issues usually much worse. Just something to check.
