Time to replace wheel seals ! What parts ?
Hey all, have quickly looked at the write up on wheels seals, I had at least one bad one show up on DMI at APrevost, I also have another marginal one and one tag that was leaking a lil has stoppped after some driving but I want to do both steer and tag seals.
Tech at Prevost said I had the old style Stemco I believe and that there is now a newer better style that I can upgrade too.
Anyone have the part# and best price online to source them? I am thinking these are the ones with the larger black center rubber caps? Thanks!

They only get replaced when they leak. I don;t know what marginal means. It is either leaking or it is not, unless it has leaked all the oil out.
Seals are generic so use whatever Prevost supplies.
As to one that has stopped leaking that’s a bad sign because they don’t repair themselves.

The parts (at least for the drive axle) are not that expensive. For a single side, the parts were only $600 at Prevost. The labor was about 5 and a half hours for just one side drive. Not sure you will be able to source “cheaper” parts.
As Jon mentioned, if a bad seal has stopped leaking, you may have nothing more to leak and that’s not good.

Yikes, five and a half hours labor for one drive axle seal. Wonder why Denver Stewart/Stevenson only took about two hours on ours. I bring them the part. Guess XLIIs are more complicated, being newer technology and all.

I must respectfully disagree with Jon on the seals are seals statement. The seal Mira Loma used (or uses) was a Scotseal classic. The premium Stemco seal appears superior. I have replaced about 6 Scotseal drive seals. I am now using Stemcos which I supplied to Prevost on both sides of the drive. I have never replaced a Stemco but only have about 50,000 miles on the oldest of the two…not a definitive amount of mileage although that was the average mileage for Scotseal drive seals on my coaches. Stemco also manufactures an upgraded locking nut system for the drives.

Any shop can do a drive axle seal in 2 hours. I’ll be 71 this month and I can do one in 2 hours.
Steer and tag axles even faster.
I used Chicago Rawhide which I think is Scotchseal and I have never had one I replaced leak. I am obviously not an expert on seals and their relative quality.

Thanks guys, I will look for the premium Stemco seals.
My drives are fine, and I checked oil levels on the steer and tag that were leaking over the course of the trip and they were fine…before I left I sucked out some of the old fluid and topped off with Lucas hub oil (“stops most leaks”) no joy on the front but one tag seemed to get better.
Whatever is not leaking I will leave alone and only fix the leakers as I know messing with a non leaking one may be asking for trouble. I finally gave up on my Dexter oil bath axles seals and went back to grease….
