  • Time for shocks replacement while doing airbags?

Posted by Archived on February 4, 2022 at 7:36 pm

I plan on having the airbags replaced at Prevost. While talking with the service writer, I asked him how much to replace the shocks at the same time. He said it would be a good time to replace the shocks and save on labor as they will be in the same area. When I received the quote, it quotes 12 hours of labor to replace all shocks, steer, drive, tag.

That seems like a lot of time to replace shocks, especially while already in those areas of the bus.

    Thoughts?

It is called double dipping. Prevost now uses flat rate books, charging a specific amount of hours for a job. There is no reduction for duplicate work. If you “discuss” this with the Service Manager, you may get a reduction of the labor. Prevost moves more and more to “corporate culture” which is not customer friendly.

I had my Liberty XLII on blocks at home and all tires off for bag replacements. I did all the shocks in less than 2 hours.

Thanks Mikee, that’s kind of what I thought. Didn’t see how it would be possible with the bus already up and wheels off it could possibly take 12 hours for a pro to do shocks.

    Thanks Tom!

Wish I had a place to work on the bus. If it took you 2 hours it would probably take me several hours longer as I haven’t done a bus before. But I have done all my vehicles shocks for many many years.

12 hours x 1700 per hour = $2040 just for installation seems ridiculously high.

Simple jobs like air bags, shocks, hub seal repairs, etc can be done a whole lot cheaper and just as well by almost any truck or bus mechanic.

If I did not do my own work the only reason I would use Prevost is if they quoted a competitive price, which as the numbers reveal they are not capable of.

Shop around for a local repair shop, and if you cannot find one you trust, widen your circle.
