  • Three Cheers For Rudy

Members that have been around for a while may remember that my Aquahot has been on its last legs for about 3 years. My boiler is leaking and I have been milking it along trying to extend its life as long as possible. I quit using the diesel burner about 2 years ago because the boiler leaked at a much bigger rate when heating the coolant with the diesel. That means the electric element was very important.

Late last week, the electric element bit the dust. Rudy Legett had worked on my Aquahot before and I remembered him telling me that the element could be a bear to get out. I sent him an email asking for pointers and he said to call him. I did and he walked me completely through the process from diagnostics, to draining the boiler, to removing the element, to finding another one and putting it back in.

Several phone calls later, it was completed. I want to say a public thank you to Rudy for his willingness to go out of his way to help me. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise with me. Thank you very much.

The old element was probably original and it took a 1/2 air impact to get it backed out of there. After getting it out and looking it over, I am very surprised it worked at all. Since we needed hot water “yesterday” I replaced the old element with a locally sourced element and it is working fine for now.

The leak in my boiler is getting worse and it may be near the point where replacement with another Aquahot or a different type of water heater is mandatory.

Im just curious, is it leaking antifreeze or is it the water?

The boiler usually holds coolant, a mixture of antifreeze and water. This boiler is what is leaking. Since the boiler is supposedly “unrepairable” I inquired of Roger Berke way back if I could just add water to prevent antifreeze and money from running on the ground every where I go. He said, yes, water would be fine since the boiler is toast anyway.

So technically it is water leaking on the ground but it is not domestic water but water acting as coolant in the boiler.

More verification that Rudy is not only one of the nicest guys around, but that he is an absolute expert when it comes to the Aquahot. We are truly fortunate to have Rudy as a PC member.

Thanks Davy, I’m just an enquiring person. I’ve been fortunate to meet Rudy at a rally in Elkhart, and yes , he is an extremely knowledgeable and kind person. I’m glad he is a member of this forum and is very helpful with his knowledge..
