  • This was a surprise !!

Posted by Larry & Diane on June 13, 2017 at 12:44 am

We are here at Camping on the Gulf in Destin … front row beach…. and surprise surprise…. we are out at dinner and get a call from the park that a canopy from a neighbor flew thru the air and landed guess where??? yep … right on top of our coach !!

I am thankful that it didn’t hit anyone nearby…. it did scratch up the side by the rear slide but didn’t break anything but my heart !!

The owner of the Canopy said he tried to hold it down but the wind was just too strong !!

Diane…I see you also had an awning out while away from the coach on a windy night. I learned a lesson on our first major trip…yes, the hard way.

We were parked on the Atlantic Ocean at Beverly Beach, FL. I was out to dinner with an old college buddy when I got a frantic phone call from my wife during our extended happy hour. “The awnings are going crazy in the wind”. I explained how to close them by pushing the two awning buttons. All set…I thought. Nope.

When I got back I could see that the front curbside wasn’t fully closed. I played and played with it to no avail. The next morning I called Tradewinds and they said they’d take a look at it. I limped over and within an hour, Brian, Tyler, and Kyle had it all fixed. Scott also stopped by for enouragement. That was my introduction to Tradewinds. What a great staff.

Moral of the story…I always close my awnings whenever I’m away from the coach. That was actually a lesson I learned from Jon a few years ago if you want to search the old threads.

    Diane and Larry,

Also sorry to see this. Just wondering if your insurance or the ‘canopy’ people’s insurance would cover this.

Anyway, glad it wasn’t a jump house full of kids!

So glad that the rose petal dispenser was untouched.

    Safe travels,

    Mark

Jimmy & Laurie…. My daughter and grand daughter were under the awning and the wind was coming as you can see from how the canopy landed from the other side of the coach… when we left them there ( she knows how to work them) there was no wind on the awning side of the coach… wouldn’t have changed anything if we had been there actually.

At the beach especially if no one is there they go in when we leave.. you are so right about that.

Mark… Our insurance will pay for any damage… we will get an estimate and probably just pay it ourselves… RV park and the canopy owner’s insurance says it was an “Act of God”…. However the owner did not have any anchors on the canopy at all which was negligence on his part for sure….. We have never had a canopy out …without using buckets of wet sand tied to each leg for anchors.

    Cheers…. Diane
