I have used the Ugly For over 20,000 miles and see a .5 MPG increase. You do not need to block the EGR tube as the Fix keeps the EGR valve closed. The fix works by tricking the ECM into thinking it is above 10,000 feet, at this height the EGR never opens.

The EGR leaks about 5% to 7% compared to full flow according to a Detroit specialist whose opinions I respect.
It takes 15 or 20 minutes to insert a plug which assures there is no diesel exhaust passing into the intake manifold.
FWIW I changed the plug I had previously installed and the exhaust side of the plug was loaded with soot so I tend to believe what I was told about leakage beyond the EGR valve.

The EGR valve is just a simple butterfly valve. I don’t
think it’s going provide a perfect seal. When you blocked the tube it prevents any exhaust
from getting in the intake, prevents any loss of boost into the exhaust and in
case of an exhaust gas cooler leak it prevents engine coolant from entering the
intake. I see no downside to blocking the tube.

Does anyone know if the Ugly Fix will work on the 2008,2009 14L Detroits?

A very high probability those year models are DDEC VI and they require a very complex reprogram
to stop the EGR. I’m not sure it’s possible to only stop the EGR on
DDEC VI because they have DPF and EGR is used to help control the DPF
temperature during the regen process.The EGR process was
programmed not to work in high altitudes on DDEC IV and early DDEC V.
The Ugly fix works by tricking the altitude sensor into sending a false
high altitude reading to the ECM. In the later DDEC V’s the ECM
programming allows the EGR to function even in high altitudes. So the
Ugly fix doesn’t work for those. That’s why you will ocasonally see
someone who said the Ugly Fix didn’t make any difference. For the later
DDEC V’s it requires a programming change for the Ugly to work or a
programming change can be made to stop the EGR with no add on devices
(Ugly Fix).You tell if it’s by the exhaust system. DDEC VI will have a diesel particulate filter (DPF) it looks like a big muffler with several sensors attached and as far as know the exhaust always exits through the roof on coaches. DDEC V and back has the eshaust exiting under the coach. Attached is a picture of a DPF on a “H” model

The Ugly Fix works on DDEC II – V only.
The engine label will tell which engine you have.
Ass far as DPFs etc, if the exhaust comes out the bottom of the coach is probably does not have a DPF, etc. If it comes out the top it does.

The ugly fix is only to be used on EGR coaches. It will do nothing for earlier coaches.
That means only EGR coaches with DDEC IV and DDEC V.

Thank you guys, that is very helpful information . We will look at other options . I’m told that those years can sometimes be problematic when you get a few miles on the engine.

Les, I don’t have a photo, but if you look at your engine you will notice a tube about 1 1/4″ in diameter that goes from the EGR intercooler on the LH side across the top of the engine over to the intake manifold on the RH side.
Just as it comes up out of the EGR intercooler there is a short 3″ long flexible coupling orange in color held in place with spring clamps. There is a second orange coupling right at the top center where it corsses over the engine. It is also held in place with spring clamps. Either of these two couplings could be removed and then insert a plug of some sort in one of the tubes or couplings and put it all back together.
You have to remove a couple of clamps holding the tubes, and of course the spring clamps so it will come apart but it is not a big deal. I’m not at the bus but I think I remember a sensor that has to be unplugged or removed from the tube coming from the EGR cooler to get stuff separated but other than that there will be nothing else required.
I used a flat round disc I installed in the lower flexible coupling and I used a band clamp to hold it in place, but any kind of plug that can take relatively high temps will work.

Here’s a picture of the tube. The connector Jon’s speaking of is kinda orange. I think there’s two of them. Block which one is easiest. I don’t think it’s neccassry to disconnect anything.

Ken, I did have to disconnect the sensor because it was easier for me to pull the tube (vertical one) out, but I agree if you don’t do it the way I did you can just leave it attached. It shows as a silver or white cable to the left of the orange connector going down from the tube in your photo.

If you are going to block the tube, you do not need the Ugly Fix.
The DDEC program calls for a 5% EGR opening when at idle etc. This an be changed in the program. I have the computer software for all DDEC engines.
The Ugly Fix works on all Series 60 EGR only engines.

I think just blocking the tube will result in the “Check Engine”
light coming on and a derate. Some of y’all try it and let us know.Mikee I think you’ll find the Ugly Fix won’t work on DDEC V rel_3.xx up.

Blocking the tube without some means of disabling the EGR operation will absolutely cause a check engine light.
