The two most important things to carry
Do not leave home without a Durable Power of Attorney and Health Care Directives for you and your partner. August 12 my wife, Martha suffered a major hemorrhagic stroke while while we were in Colorado at Tiger Run RV Resort, we are from Missouri. We had both documents with us. We provided these documents to the hospital in Denver.
If you don’t know, the Durable Power of Attorney allows a Designated person to make health care choices, if patient is unable to, in accordance to their Health Care Directive. Both documents should be updated every five years. In our case I was the first designated person. Then in birth order each of our three children. Both these documents were invaluable to us during Martha‘s hospital stay. We had one doctor that was not doing what we had all agreed upon. We simply pointed to the Health Care Directive and told him what course of action we were taking. He complied.
A Health Care Directive takes life and death decision away from the family and doctors. Those critical choices have been pre-made by the patient, when they were capable and competent. It is extremely hard to follow a Health Care Directive. But, I believe, it is the most loving thing you can do.
Lovingly, following Martha’s Health Care Directives, she passed August 27 th. She was 70 years old and we had been married 48 years.
