pam and I are is the last few weeks before we depart the USAF and the DC area. We will tour the Northeast and then head home to Texas.

i do have a question for the forum. I have been reading that Texas requires an emission inspection on 96 and newer RV and buses. I have a 98 XL and wonder if I’ll be able to pass. Does anyone here have their. Bus registered in the Dallas or Houston area? Where do you get the bus checked?

I know Marathon and some others are in both cities, somebody must know how this process goes? Any info would be appriciated

Inspections are required to have any vehicle registered and to renew registration. They check the basics; lights, signals, tires, horn, etc. However, to the best of my knowledge there is no emissions testing on Diesel engines in TX. I have 2 diesel pickups and my wife’s vehicle is diesel along with our bus being diesel and I have never needed them tested to get registered.

I have had my bus inspected annually in Houston for the last 10 years. Never had an emissions test. They generally check the lights and that is about it.

My experience is that if its registered in an emissions county, you could be required to have an emmissions test. We have lived in both types of counties with diesel coaches. By far the non emmissions county was way easier for inspection and only $12/year, cheapest expense on a Prevost. The insoection can be done in any county as long as the county its registered in is the same type of county for inspection, emmissions vs non emmissions county.

but you also can self inspect if the bus is not physically in Texas. If you plan to fulltime, use Escapees as permanent address and bus registration. Polk county is a non emmissions county, inspection can then be done in any county.

Chip, I’m in the middle of the DFW area and have never had to do an emission test and if I remember correctly the inspection is about $12.00. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies. We have family in Grand Prairie which is in Dallas County, am emissions county. I will look in to the escapees as suggested. Since we are full time, Escapee’s may be our best bet, I will get an emissions test done when we get back. I’d like to know how the bus fares in a test.

I have had a Prevost in Texas since 1995. There is only a safety inspection on diesel motorhomes. Lights, horn, wipers, and brakes. $12.50 out the door.
