  • Teflon Tape or not

Posted by Archived on June 7, 2014 at 5:48 pm

I’m about to start replacing the Norgren valves. I‘ve seen differing reports on sealing the threaded fittings. Is it best to use teflon tape on these or some type pipe dope? If dope any specific type?

What I have used with more success is the teflon pipe thread compound from NAPA. I apply it starting behind the first thread, a thin coat and let it set up for just a short time. I have had greater success than with the tape but others have had greater success with the tape. It would be interesting to see which method seems to be best.

My concern no matter what is used is keeping foreign material from the system because a little piece of anything can cause a valve to leak.

    Joe,

Teflon tape does not work as well as Pipe Compound. Permatex is what I use, and it is at NAPA as Jon said.

Ditto….I like the pipe thread compound from NAPA. Using the small size tube makes it easy to handle with less mess.

The teflon tape has it’s place in sealing up threads but not with Norgren valve replacements.

Many thanks. I’ll visit my local NAPA store this afternoon. 3 ports have arrived, 5 ports have been shipped.
