I have Taptalk installed on a couple of my forums that I run. Taptalk software has to be installed by the forum owner for it to work. It’s easy to do and free. I can help if the owners want to add that option here.

It’s a application for mobile devices that makes using forums useable and convenient. A must for anyone that is on the go.

Since I am computer and smart phone challenged tell me how this site would benefit from changes, and what difference it would make in user convenience.

Tom has all the latest and greatest devices and I have watched him do anything he wants, not only on the forum, but even on the administrative side of our site. Yet he has never mentioned tapatalk, nor has our web guy.

Convince me. Make the justification compelling because if you can convince me I have to sell it to our computer guy who takes care of us.

Jon, I also had never heard of tapatalk and googled it. I’m sure the OP can explain it but from what I read about it, it will cost you and Tom at least $69 a month for the starting plan if want it on your site.

The easiest way to demo it would be to have you go to another forum that uses it, say busgreasemonkey, or eaglesinternational or bus nuts or busconversions and just try it. It is a free app to the user, didn’t know they might charge the forum.

If it is something that the admins here don’t wish to enable then that’s okay too, they are doing a lot already and I certainly don’t wish to add to their burden. Jon you might ask Scott over at greasemonkeys if it is a hassle or expense that is worth it or not. I do see a lot of people using it tho.

At a glance the app shows all unread posts on all threads since the last time you logged in, shows any posts to any threads you might have started.

I still don’t know what it is and what it does for our members.

Maybe Tom has to step in and lead this discussion because I don’t have a smart phone and I have no issues on any forum accessing them with my PC and laptop.

I have feedback from our web guy.

He is aware of tapatalk and says it is a good thing. However it only works with “canned” forum software. Our forum is custom made so it will not work on it. Just so everyone is aware when Tom and I were having the PC web site and forum set up we opted to place the security of our members’ privacy as one of our priorities.

A number of us were victims of a previous web site in which the owner sold personal information and as a result a lot of information was available to anyone willing to look for it on the internet, including home addresses and cell phone numbers. So we opted for less features such as the elimination of a private message feature, and a forum that was wide open for public viewing but with protection of your registration information. So far so good.

FWIW private forums are not. We know that so-called private forums are set up so once a person has access that “intruder” can go to members’ profiles and harvest email addresses and other information made available through that feature. We have lost the ability to have some features in favor of preventing unwanted access to folks who would use that information in a way that could harm our members, thus our custom forum.

Taptalk doesn’t cost forum owners anything. The users have to buy an app if they want to use it. It is cheap, and it is good. You can do a web version of a site with your smart phone… with lots of scrolling. Taptalk just converts it to fit your screen. It’s more than that, but that is it’s basic role.

As far as security of ‘canned’ software, I have to disagree. Eagles International is one of my forums. It is based on a popular forum software. But it is very far from canned. How far you customize from the original software is up to the imagination, knowledge, and dedication of the webmaster. Privacy and security has always been my main concern at Eagles Intermational too. I started the EI forum in 2008, and to date not one spammer has ever gotten past security. And no member’s information has been compromised.

None of that is pointed at whether Tapatalk is used on this forum or not. I generally use my iPad instead of my phone, and the webs version is fine. I was just answering questions about what Tapatalk is, and defending against the idea that if you start with a bulletin board program of some sort, then you have security issues.

    Some conflicting information above.

Tapatalk is free to forum owners… UNLESS, you have your own forum software, which is apparently the case here. This forum would be a Build Your Own setup and would cost $69 per month. Not worth it for this forum. But for free on forums that are based on the major software packages is a very good deal.

It used to be that the Client software had a cost. Now they have a free basic Tapatalk client for free, or the Pro version with more features for $3.99. A small cost for what all you get. I have Pro on my phone even though I might only use it once every few months. If I do need to access the forums from my phone, it just makes it much easier.
