  • Tag air chamber pic?

Posted by Bob on September 15, 2012 at 8:22 pm

I need to do some work on my Rockwell durmaster tag axle air chambers (disc brakes) on my !998 45XLE . I need a diagram. I have a slow air leak with parking brake released. Would be nice to have picture rather than just assume they work like all other chambers. Page 12-17 of the Prevost manual is all I have. There is service and parking brake both on this unit. the parking brake side is leaking. I tried internet search but maybe I’m not smart enough. Thanks Bob.

It has been a long time since spring brake diaphragms were serviceable. I’m thinking maybe 20 years. If your tag axle emergency brake chamber is leaking with the brake released I think you are going to need to buy one.

If I remember correctly they are 16/20 or 16/24 and you will not find that combo on anyone’s shelf except Prevost. Prevost wanted a very high price for that when I replaced mine so I bought a 16/20 or 16/24 piggyback and a 16 and built it up. I think my cost was in the $140 range.

The# in my book can’t be correct ,because it comes back at over $700 each. Will ck parts by phone next week by vin # for coach. I have brake can caged and think I’m going to take look inside. Have the 4 inch rubbers on shelf. Duck! Others that don’t have big $ are going to have to face this problem soon. Where did you get your parts? I have a good local brake supply guy. Bob

Sit down before you call parts because I don’t think you will be prepared for the price. I got my piggy back and single chamber from Truck-Pro. I am sure Fleet Pride or any other truck supplie house can special order it for you, not as a complete assembly. As stated previously, going by memory the 30/36 for the drives was about $120 and buying the piggy bacjk and the #16 single to make one was about $140. I think the #30 on my steer was $35. Share us your prices when you get them.

You may have replaced spring brake diaphragms in the past, but anymore they are not serviceable so the days of a repair for the cost of a diaphragm are gone. Unlike trucks that have sizes so common the truck parts houses all have them in pins in the front for a few bucks each for singles and for $100 or less for combos our bus brake chambers are all odd sized and except for the steers I never find them in stock.

    Bob,

If corrosion was not an issue, rebuilding the brake chambers was an accepted way of doing things. On the combos with spring brakes it was necessary to cage the spring, but once that was done it was no magic repairing or rebuilding them. Now the combos are permanently assembled in the spring chamber side and are non serviceable. So as a result we are forced to buy at least piggy backs.

I have opted to no longer rebuild any brake chambers because even if a diaphragm is all that is needed it is probable the disc it pushes against has corrosion (due to the poor finish quality of the original part) and that corrosion eventually wears through the replacement diaphragm quickly. Others still replace the diaphragms and the springs. But no more on spring brakes.

I am in the habit of replacing all brake chambers every 5 years. Regardless of condition. The Prevost shop manual calls for every 100,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first so I stretch the limits obviously. I have posted the availabllity of my brake chambers every time I have removed them, but nobody seems interested so I end up throwing them away. Too bad.

We just replaced both of our tag lift brake chambers (that’s what Prevost Parts called them) they were ($480+ each) they were a type 36 ( sorry can’t remember exactly) the H may be different. One was leaking the other just looked tired so we did them both.

They were not serviceable according to Prevost.

I think Bob is talking about the combo service / emergency brake chamber. But either way the price is staggering.
