  • Surge Protectors

Does anyone use the Surge Gard Protectors that are sold at camping world? Is this worthwhile? I see a lot of them and hear many stories about surges burning up appliances and systems.

Paul & Lisa, the Progressive Industries EMS PT50C 50 amp protector is well reviewed. It costs about $350 online. I’ve been using mine for 2 years with no drama whatsoever.

Paul I also have a Progressive. Mine is 6 years old. We were in the keys in Feburary when mine had a short and burnt for some reason. I sent it back to them and it was fixed for free!! I think there may have been a problem in the park. What I do know, at the time a Prevost Royal with no surge protector had a problem also. They left and were gone for 10 days to have their issues inside the coach fixed. I don’t leave home without it! Buy a Progressive, less cost is not always the best deal in the long run. Rick

There are a number of benefits to having surge protectors, which tend to do more than offer protection against spikes in voltage. They will also protect against mis-wired power outlets.

I had one in my last coach and removed it when I traded it in. believe it or not I just installed it in the current one yesterday. I dont know if they work or not but (knock on wood) I havent lost any electronics due to power problems.

DO NOT waste your money on one that is only a surge suppressor. Do invest in a power management device. The 2 leaders in the RV industry are Progressive Industries and TRC, the manufacturers of the Surge Guard line. Both have portable and hardwired units. I’ve had both but prefer Progressive Industries for their lifetime warranty. Keep in mind that if these devices are ever hit by a lightning strike they will have to be repaired. With Progessive it will be repaired or replaced for the cost of shipping to them.

If you go with a hardwired unit, get one that has a bypass function unless you can easily wire around it.

Both have good reviews and cost about the same. That said my TRC unit is headed back tomorrow as a warrenty replacement.

Mine has an intermittent problem where it will not turn on and do it’s power checks when power is applied. Tech support indicated this was the first problem like that they had seen. It will be replaced with a new unit.
