Should have posted this under this thread rather than my search under “Flea Market.”
What is the most popular Progressive EMS protector: SSP-50X, SSP-50XL or EMS-PT50C?

Tim, the least expensive gives you the same protection, just depends how much info you want based on what coach you have. Geo.

Here is what I have, and I think Tom does also.
The bad part is we have no clue if any work or not until it is too late.

The expensive one sure has all the bells and whistles, but I know lot’s of folks that have had problems with them.
The cheaper one Jon and I use has performed for 7 years and no issues, but it’s only a surge protector.

I have the one With all the bells and whistles and no problems have had it for 5 years , the cheaper one is also very good too

The cheaper one (for sale) and the more exppensive, hard-wired one. I went for hard-wired because it is one less item I have to think about. When I plug into the power pedestal, power goes to and through the hard wired surge protector. Done.

Maybe when I reach your age Ronald I’ll have them hard wire a surge protector too 🙂

I’ve
had both, built in and portable and prefer the portable. If the
device gets fried (sacrifices itself) due to a power surge, I can get
a new one and keep using the bus without dismantling the built in
unit.
Both serve the purpose well.

My coach came with a built in unit which functions perfectly but after reading the experiences of others and meeting an SOB owner whose coach was completely fried I also use the portable unit from Progressive. Maybe overkill but cheap insurance and peace of mind. -
Thanks! Ordered the SSP-50XL which comes with a weatherproof cover and supposedly brighter LED lights. As all stated, cheap insurance.

On the subject of surge protector type equipment, I would like to comment that some of Progressive’s units only absorb joules of energy, and some have a contactor that disconnects power to the coach for am open neutral or bad wiring or low or high sustained voltage. I personally recommend getting one of the units that also provides these features. We have always used, recommended, and installed the TRC “surge guard” units, but in the recent past I have heard of many customers with problems and prematurely failing units by them. And the Progressive products boast a lifetime warranty, where TRC only offers a year warranty. Now I’m not sure of which to recommend. But whichever brand you get, at least get one of them and the version with a contactor, not just spike-absorbing MOV’s. Just my thoughts on the matter. I’ll continue to read your experiences with both products as of late to see which has the best recent track record.

The Progressive unit is faster and seems to work better, plus it is repairable. The TRC folks will not sell parts for their units. Most folks I know are going with Progressive surge guards and transfer switches.

The high priced one does that it’s what I have if high power or low power it shuts it down until it is good again or bad power for what ever reason it shuts it down and keeps checking it until it’s good
