  • Superior Gearbox Oil?

Posted by DON on June 23, 2021 at 9:54 pm

Which gear oil do we use in our Superior right angle bevel gearbox? The Mobil SHC 630, good ole fashion 80w90, or synthetic 75w90 gear oil?

The Prevost mx manual recommends Mobil SHC 630 gear oil. The Superior Gearbox Company mx manual recommends Mobil 80w90, or synthetic 75w90 gear oil. Who/Which is correct?

I called Superior and talked with an engineer. Their recommendation is only a “general” purpose recommendation. Prevost recommendation is “specific” to the application. So use Mobil SHC 630 gear oil. My buses Superior W400 series gear box holds 28 oz. Mobil SHC 630 is readily available online(ebay, etc) for $20/qt.

    Don

I cant answer your question exactly, what i run in mine is Total Full Synthetic 75/90, same as rear axle, my rear axle temp runs approx 10 deg cooler than with 80/90 gear oil

I change my superior g/box oil annually, seems to run well with the Total Synthetic

Somebody mentioned on a FB Prevost group that their Prevost mx manual recommends Mobil SHC 634 for the fan drive gearbox, so I did a little more research. In the Prevost mx manual for 1990-2000 XL, I have found reference to use 3 different oils for the fan drive gearbox. ????????

    1) Mobil SHC 630 – Section 5, para 8.3, item 7 on p. 5-15.
    2) ISO VG 460 – Section 24, para 7.1 on p. 24-7: and para 7.4, on p. 24-9; para 8., p. 24-11.
    3) Mobil SHC 634 – Section 24, para 8., on p. 24-11.

Don, did you end up using the SHC 630 oil for your gearbox. I am changing my oil and just ordered SHC 630 based on your recommendation in this thread. It is kind of crazy that my maintenance manual list both the SHC 630 and the ISO VG 460 SHC 634 depending on what section I am reading. I have a 1998 Prevost XL-40 by Country Coach.

I have run Mobil SHC 630 and Amsoil Servere Gear 75w-90 wo/issue.

    Currently I’m running a 50/50 mixture of SHC 630 & 634 since I can’t easily get SHC 632.

I read somewhere that there wasn’t a drain plug on this gear box to drain the old oil out. Is that true? If so how do you get the old oil out?

The manual indicates the IS a drain plug.

I suck out the oil with either a large syringe or a small hand suction pump.

    Great tip!

Thanks Don for posting the link about this.

I had no idea about the maintenance schedule, and how hot it gets in there.

Pretty critical to change out the oil regularly.

How close to the top of the fill hole should the oil level be?

See page 3 of the manual:”
    Thanks Don!
