  • Super Single Changeover

Posted by DON on July 6, 2019 at 9:48 pm

I’ve done a lot of research to see if I could changeover from my STUD PILOTED duals to super singles. I can, but it wouldn’t be easy. Nobody(Alcoa, Accuride, Maxion, Jantsa) makes STUD PILOTED 14″, 13″, or 12.25″ wide wheels anymore. They stopped making them about 10 yrs ago 🙁 They only make HUB PILOTED wide wheels.

I could change my hubs. I’m probably gonna keep my duals. I have enough projects.

Somewhere I heard 2002 and later XLs all have HUB PILOTED drive wheels? Is this true? If it is, no sweat changing to super singles. I know of only two Prevosts that run super singles. One is a XL and one is an XL2.

While the use of super singles may be appealing, if I had a coach with all 120 or 315 tires there isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that I would ever add another size to the mix.

There have been countless posts from folks whose coaches have 365 and 315 tires and when 365 fails the difficulty in getting back on the road ranges from inconvenient to seemingly everlasting. At least by maintaining a single size tire on the coach with 8.25 or 90 wheels a tire failure does not take on the epic proportions encountered when wheels are very wide or the tire size is not typical of a dealer’s inventory.

It was enough of a pain when we had 120 or 315 because when they were first introduced the common sizes used by most trucks was 110 or 295.

This was my experience with a 2000 model H3 many years back. Installing 365’s and 10.25 wheels. Studs changed to Hub Pilot , hubs were untouched , already correct size to bolt up hub piloted wheels.

It MAY only be necessary to change the studs and nuts as this was also my experience going from stud to hub centric on steer. Probably necessary to compare your drive hubs to newer drive hubs. I’m watching with interest since you wizened me up to the fact that I cannot buy a replacement drive wheel.

My research revealed that both STUD and HUB piloted wheels have the same size center hole, 8.70″ or 221mm. They have the same diameter bolt pattern, 11.25″, and 10 stud holes. About the only difference is STUD piloted wheels have tappered seats.

Shelly & Sandy: question? so all you had to change was the studs and lug nuts to make you STUD piloted hubs work? If that’s the case, super singles are back on the table for us 🙂

Jon, Michelin super single (455/55 etc) tire availability is a concern, but even Michelin 315/80s are a little scarce. We live in a 295 and/or 11R world.

Top pic is hub piloted, see the ridge that centers the wheel?

Bottom pic is STUD piloted, hub fills the wheel center hole.

I would guess you should have guide tangs as pictured in the first photo to use a hub piloted wheel but maybe not if the hub is machined to the correct OD. In fact, there may be no room for guide tangs on the drive hub.

Yes, Prevost Mira Loma changed my stud piloted front wheels to the larger hub piloted wheels for 365 tires with only a stud/nut change. I have a 1999 chassis…not sure what would be on yours.

    Let’s think:

    1. Find early xl2 with hub centric drive wheels.

    2. ck part# for hubs

    3. ck part# for your hubs

If they match, you’re good to go. If they don’t match, they may not match for another reason, so that’s inconclusive.

Interestingly, the prevost parts manual shows the same hubs for E-638 through Y-7045 (obviously, the parts people could probably narrow it)…BOTH stud and hub mounts with p/n 621170 (hub) and 621160 and 61 (r & l, stud).

Wonder if they are identical except for studs or not?

Upon further review, I believe the hub piloted wheels have a smaller center hole and smaller wheel stud holes than the stud piloted (budd-ball seat) wheel. Of course there is the tappered seat difference too.

The problem is that nobody makes a 22.5″- 14″ wide stud piloted wheel anymore. They make these wheels for hub piloted setups only.

So again, can the hub be swapped? Probably, but I’ve got too many projects ahead of this.

    I’ll stick with the duals.

Why mess around with singles? If you have a flat, you are dead on the road until you can get someone out to replace it. At least with duals, you can limp it in to a shop avoiding the extra costs.

    WHY ?????
    the short answer:
    CHICKS DIG EM !!!!

WHAT IF ???? I’d pull over and deal with it, just like I would if I had a front go flat.

    The longer answer:
I guess it’s about “Risk/Reward”? My tolerance meter says it’s OK.

I was a pro pilot for thirty yrs – 1980-2010. Early in my career I accumulated hundreds of hours flying single engine aircraft at night and/or in IFR conditions. I have a 1000 hrs in my homebuilt experimental single engine tail dragger airplane that I’ve owned and maintained since 1985. I drag race 1200 hp cars. I race bicycles. I started scuba diving when I was 15. I could go on and on. I haven’t been killed or injured, or killed or injured anybody else. I must be doing something wrong?

Other peoples “Risk/Reward” tolerance? different than mine? and that’s OK .

But mainly Because Chicks Dig Em !!!!
