Summer Heat – Check your Inverters
Posted by Archived on July 23, 2015 at 7:45 pmNothing kills our inverters like heat that can’t be exhausted from the bays, especially in the summer with high temps. One of my two inverter compartment exhaust fans failed and I had just checked them a month ago. My Marathon has two 170 CFM 24v fans to move air through the compartment and exhaust under the bus. They have a snap disk that turns the fans on at 110 degree’s, so make sure yours is working.
Don’t forget to check your internal inverter fans as well.

That’s what happens when you own a Marathon fan goes out you have to replace it , when a liberty fan goes out a tech shows up at night and puts new one in before you know it’s bad !!!! LoL

That’s good advice Tom. Additionally mine are under a carpeted enclosure in the 3rd bay and are ventilated from underneath the coach.

That is only half of the concern.
Keeping the environment where the inverters are located cool is important, but of greater importance is to make sure the internal inverter fans are working also.

Checked out Marathon #591 early this morning. I’am happy to report all cooling fans are working.

Could you find some projects that can be done inside the bus in air conditioning comfort rather then inside a bay when it’s 93 deg. outside ?

Front fan removed, it’s on the right side of the inverter.
The front one is right side next to the inverter, a real bitch to get at.
Tough spot to get a picture. It’s behind the inverters mounted up high facing the curb side door.
The front fan pulls air from under the bus and the rear fan discharges air under the bus.

Thanks Tom. Being new to the Prevo, all what I know/they show me about inverters were couple switches on 2nd bay, DS. Since everything is carpeted / covered in the belly, How do I locate these inverts? I guess call Leon at Marathon…will investigate in the am, thanks

You don’t need to call Leon. Your inverters live in the 2nd bay driver side mounted to the ceiling behind a carpeted panel. Pull 4 screws, 2 each side, remove the front panel then slide out the bottom panel. You are then looking at the inverters.
Here’s how to check the fans..
There is a snap disc between the inverters at the rear that turns on the power to the fans at the preset temperature. All you have to do is jump across the terminals and fans should come on. One terminal is the power and the other side has a wire that goes to each of the 2 fans. They’re 24 volt and mine are set to come on at 100 – 110 degress.
While you’re in there, blow out the inverters with air, they get dusty.

Don’t do that unless you are comfortable playing with electric. And try to understand it just proves the fan works, but doesn’t tell you there is a problem anywhere else in the circuit.
I try to load my inverters so the fan kicks on proving the whole cooling system.

The purpose of this post is to verify the fans work and this is a simple test involving low voltage.Dorel – If you’re not comfortable using a jumper wire, use a hair dryer to heat the snap disk.
I wanted to make sure the fans were working while at home in the garage instead of having an expensive inverter failure while on the road becuase of excessive heat.

Good idea because the use of a hair dryer is one way to verify the inverter cooling system is working.
Inverters are very reliable, but only if they have proper cooling. One important consideration is they do collect all sorts of dust internally. Just like A/C system filters get clogged with dust and dirt, inverters tend to collect the same debris and they periodically need to be vacuumed or blown clean with compressed air.

I have one of those little dayton axial fans. It is mounted in the back wall of the electric bay and blows into the center compartment that holds the Batteries and a cruse air. When I got the bus it was wired up direct and ran 24-7. I put it on a thermostat set at 80deg….

Others have done the same thing. Just be aware you have introduced another potential failure point and just because you don’t hear the fan running when you are near your coach in your garage, it doesn’t mean the thermostat has turned it off.
Liberty considers keeping the bay cool to be so important, the fan was installed without a thermostat.

What Liberty didn’t do was plumb the fan intake/exhaust via tubes for outside air. Liberty circulates bay air using those 24/7 fans hard wired to the inverters and bay air temps can be hotter than outside air in the summer. Marathon did a better job by using duct work and fans working in tandem, one pushing and the other pulling ambient air only when the temps require cooling via the thermostat.
