  • Stuck in 4th gear

Posted by Greg on November 15, 2015 at 2:14 pm

Does anyone have an idea why this might happen?

lLeaving Houston headed home to New Braunfels when I get a check transmission light.

seems its stuck in 4th. When i got to a place to pull over it didn’t down shift and when I stopped it wouldn’t go in to neutral. Turned the engine of and back on and it went in to neutral and when placed in drive is showed 6, went into reverse and back.

Pulled out and all was good from then on.

I would bet it’s your transmission shift sensor on the CS up by the bell housing. Prevost and Allison have them for around 1500 dollars.

You need to get the bus in the air or raise it some to change.

After install they will reprogram it.

This sensor has many symptoms, bucking, slipping and what you describe. hope it’s that easy for you.

I had that happen and in my case it was corrosion in the connector that was causing the ATEC to read low temps. The transmission will not shift below a certain temp. Whatever the cause you need to get the codes read ASAP.

You can read the codes from the shift pad. Your owners manual will tell you how.

I had the same problem in Alaska, but is was stuck in fifth. As per Prevost costumer service, shut off engine for a few minutes and re start, work fine untill we arived in Anchoage. Replace the input and output sencors, has been running great. Any Allison shop can preform this repair.
