  • Stuck door on Marathon

Posted by Bill on February 3, 2014 at 12:54 am

    Hey Guys,

Anyone with a Marathon had issues with the auto lock sticking… We are in Reno it’s cold and snowing and the door doesn’t always lock or unlock correctly with the keypad or fob… This has happened before again when it’s cold.. I tried a bit of WD-40 on the bolt and it didn’t really help..

If I had to guess it’s an allignment issue like the door won’t close all the way and the dead bolt won’t work properly…. So far I have been able to get it to work with the key… but really don’t want to get locked out. Thinking about calling a locksmith to take a look… but thought I would check here for suggestions first…

Al and Sid… MCC is looking even better this week… not a good sign when you need a heated water hose..

I assume your inner door panel is easy to remove. Once you have it off the entire mechanism can be seen and if something is binding it can be lubricated or adjusted.

But if it is cold and snowing that might not be the thing to do now.

If it is intermittent it is likely cold related. But another common problem on Marathons of our vintage is that the wires to the lock and door bell are routed along the upper door hinge arm. The wires bend every time you open/close the door. Eventually, they will fatigue and break or if not routed correctly get cut by the hinge action. Easy fix, there is an access panel right next to the door hinge.

Really should not use WD40 on any kind of locking mechanism, it will gum up especially in cold weather.

Get some lock lubricant from any hardware type store and try that. Most of it is graphite based and really makes a difference.

    Good luck.
