  • Strange buzz from behind breaker panel

Posted by Darrell on September 7, 2020 at 9:14 am

Hello everyone while parked at a campground the shore power went off for about 5 minutes and the lights dimmed and flickered (24 volt bath lights) at that point there was a buzz behind the breaker panel also sounding like arcing. once the power was restored everything came back online. the bus always went from shore power to battery with no problem now I am concerned there might be a transfer switch going bad. any suggestions? I might have to pull the fridge out to fix it.

    1996 Liberty 45 XL

    Thanks

Since each coach and each model year is unique to an extent the origin of the buzzing would be a guess without pulling the panel to see what is behind it making the noise. I had relays or contactors for my Cruisairs behind the panel in one of my coaches and depending on conditions I would sometimes get a buzzing noise.

But I do not know if the coach in question would have them or not, or if it did where they would be located. I believe mine might have been associated with the Allen Bradley system, but that is solely a guess.

Thanks Jon I think I will turn off shore power and see if I can locate the sound, I just am not looking forward to pulling the fridge out to get back behind the panel. do you know if it could be the 12 or 24 volt converter? as always I thank you for your advice. By the way your advice on fixing the rear camera worked great we have had 40 degree weather and with hot showers no condensation on the camera housing thanks again

I have had relays and transfer switch modules chatter and buzz like that mostly from incorrect voltage.

Like Jon said don’t have a clue what in your coach was buzzing but I would try going back and forth from shore to inverter and see if you can replicate the issue.

Some one changed out one of my relays in my 99 CC with a 24v instead of a 12v and it buzzed like a rattle snake.

On my coach the relays or contactors were mounted on the wall panel housing the refrigerator on the circuit breaker side of the panel. I seriously doubt if you are going to find any electrical devices behind the refrigerator.

The CB panel had 6 or 8 screws and enough slack in the wires and cables to tip sideways so the back of the panel was visible as well as whatever devices were housed in that area.

Lots of electrical power in there, so if you plan on taking a look you might want to consider shutting everything down. All shore power, inverter power, house battery master switches, etc. Make sure you follow the coach shut down procedures.

What Buddy said is the first thing I would do, with starting to open things up a last resort.

I don’t know if this helps or not.

But if I followed the co-pilot’s direction whenever she heard a buzz or hum or click or clatter in the coach she doesn’t think she heard before “to call Jeff” … he’d never get anything done in the shop while we’re out using the coach.

That’s not to say you shouldn’t be concerned. But sometimes those sounds seem to just go away (note I didn’t say “just fix themselves” as I think there is a difference).

Thanks guys I am worried because of a chance of an electrical fire and I will proceed with caution and Jon i see the screws on the CB panel and will try tilting the panel to see what is mounted on the wall. We are camped at one of Dicks recommendations Hiawatha trailer resort in Woodruff WI nice place and there is an RV parts place close by if I need to order parts. Do you know where the bus shut down procedure would be? is it in the owners manual? I will let you all know what I find Thanks

The shut down procedure should be in the Liberty Owners Manual.

Darrell, are you sure your batteries are any good?

The batteries are three years old they are Interstate Batteries and show good voltage on the heart interface. they are so hard to get to to check them I wish they were on a slide so you could pull them out.

Any time something needs to be checked or investigated I do the easy stuff first. I’m lazy and often problems tend to be easily identified.

But some stuff might start easy, but the deeper you get into it the more difficult it becomes.

In this case I don’t believe anything was identified as not working. What I think I understood the problem to be was an unidentified unusual noise. Rather than tear the bus apart or get into difficult places the suggestion above to see if the noise can be duplicated is by far the place to start. If nothing other than an unusual noise is detected and everything works as intended why go further? Other than satisfying a curiosity does it make sense to chase a non-problem?

Good advice Jon I will first see if I can duplicate the noise then start removing bits at a time to find it. and Dick I will look in the owners manual for the shut down procedure.

    Thanks

Other than trying to duplicate the noise and see if it means something is not working, why start taking things apart?

For example if a change in voltage causes a relay coil to buzz, other than having the satisfaction of actually knowing that for a fact what is the benefit? If that relay is behind the circuit breaker electrical panel, are you really going to stick your head in there just to locate and see a buzzing relay which is only going to do that when you have power restored? I try to avoid situations where electric power can hurt me, and in this case it sounds like you need stuff powered up so you can pinpoint the source of the noise.

If the lights dimmed and flickered while I heard an unusual buzzing noise behind the electrical panel, I’d be inclined to take a look in there.

After going through the buses electrical system from house batteries to shore power I have found the problem. As my wife turned off the shore power I stayed inside and removed the remote heart inverter panel’s so I could see behind the CB panel when she turned off the breaker relays mounted on the wall buzzed and snapped the voltage on the heart inverter read out showed 10 volts not enough to trip the relays. So the bottom line is the house batteries are shot. I did place a call to Interstate Batteries but as they were purchased in the fall of 2017 They are likely out of warranty. Thanks for all the comments and support

Step one……..get in touch with Tom and at the very least consider Lifeline. Until I switched to LiFePo4 this year I used Lifelines exclusively on my last two coaches and they never let me down.

They appear to be the most widely used battery among our members and it is likely because of how well they perform.
