Stop Engine light
Posted by Larry on July 7, 2014 at 6:35 pmThe stop engine light came on, shut the engine off. Coolant was low, below the probe, filled coolant tank up. Now engine will not restart, let me rephrase that, nothing at ignition switch, like circuit is dead. Engine will start from rear panel. Is there a reset of some sort?

no other reset other than key off….try starting at rear run box, turn ignition switch to run position, flip rear run to normal position quickly. Does engine stay running, if not does dash lights power up while running from rear position with key on.

I’m not near the bus right now.
I did not try flipping rear switch to normal with ignition sw. on.
Dash lights do not power up with key in run position and running from rear. -
The selector switch at the rear box for front or rear start has been a maintenance problem in the past. Rapid switching as Jeff suggests could temporarily cure the problem by cleaning the switch contacts. Check the resistance across the contacts or measure the voltage in each position. It might be that just replacing the switch is all you need.
There is no reset. Once you corrected the initial problem you did all you had to do. The starting issue is just coincidental.

I’d want to know where the lost coolant went, pull your dipstick and make sure it’s not in the crankcase before you operate the engine. I had a situation where a o-ring on a cylinder liner broke and allowing coolant into the engine oil.

Orren, This bus has been sitting for quite a long time. No idea where coolant went, oil is at full mark with no indication of any water. No where on engine or hoses do I see any leaks, no smoke from engine.

There is a red-button breaker for front ignition switch feed that may have tripped and the buttons often times don’t pop out. Try manually tripping and resetting the breaker in the front. With front key on, you should always have a/c blower and select warning lights, regardless of any engine mechanical issues, or transmission lockout of starter. If not, that breaker has tripped. It is CB-10, 8-amp.

To add, the only other thing that also interrupts power to the front key switch is if you have the Ford Keyless entry system. Hit your key fob and try again to start. Just going through the list of strange unrelated items that may have happened causing this.

benc,,,I owe you a beer!!!
You mentioned the Ford keyless entry, I started thinking, day before yesterday when I left the bus, I locked the door with the remote, then cut the battery switches off. When I came back to it yesterday, I walked up to door, hit remote, since battery switches were off, remote would not work, so I opened the door with the key, then walked to rear and turned battery switches on. Then when I tried to start the bus, it would not.
When I got back to bus this afternoon, I first went to rear, turned battery switches on, walked back to the door, unlocked door with remote, put key in ignition, turned, guages came to life, turned to start, fired right up.
The remote does kill the ignition circuit, unlocking door with the key does not turn circuit back on, you have to unlock with remote to reconnect ignition circuit.
This was a learning experience.
Thanks again.
