  • Stereo wiring?

Posted by Chas on January 5, 2014 at 10:59 am

Trying to figure out the wiring for the auto stereo in the dash. Currently there is a new(er) JVC that has been wired into the dash using only the Yellow (battery), Black (ground), Red (accessory/ignition) and blue (powered amp/antenna). These are wired to a Yellow/Black/Red/Blue and BlueWhite wires coming somewhere off the harness (really can’t trace them that deep into the dash).

The issue I am having is the stereo gets power, but wont actually stay on. I know it’s getting power as I can insert/eject a CD and the lights will light up. But then the lights go out and then nothing. I have tried a new unit and basically the same thing.

I am thinking if there is a standard factory plug on the Prevost that is common to say GM/Ford/Chrysler/other, I could get a factory adapter to wire to the stereo and then plug into the wiring harness properly.

There seems to be a plug that looks like a stereo plug, but not sure if it’ standard to a specific manufacturer. I do know the current wiring is not correct.

    Charles,

I don’t have an answer for you, but that will be Liberty installed systems.

Went throught the wiring diagrams from Liberty… Couldnt find anything on the in-dash stereo.

Will keep looking. The Yellow line is getting 12volts, so I know it’s good. Trying to figure out what they red line should do (in terms of volts) when the ignition is switched on. There is a illumination wire on the stereo wiring harness (orange/white), but all details I find on that is that it’s “optional” and if not connected, the radio will illuminate at 100% (which is fine).

Speakers are not actually using the wiring harness and are using RCA cables that I guess go to the Alpine speakers in the ceiling above driver/living room.

my thinking is most of the radios today have a continuous 12 volt feed for radio memory, an ignition source for off and on and you have to have a wire connected to the headlights so the radio will dim at night.

A common mistake is to wire the power antennae trigger wire (blue) to the amp turn on lead. The radio will work but when you insert a CD, it shuts the amps off. The antennae wire only has power when it is in tuner mode. Make sure the amp trigger wire (blue with white stripe) is hooked to the amp remote turn on wire.

Looking at this same issue and read tells me that the antenae wire is only good for the antenae and you should use another wire for the amp power.

That is correct. Both wires are there. The confusion comes in because both wires are dark blue. The amp turn on wire should be blue with a white stripe. It should also be 12 vdc when the radio is on regardless of the source/mode (am/fm, CD, satellite, aux.) The power antennae wire, usually solid blue, is 12 vdc only in am/fm mode.

Still digging into this. not sure why this should be SO complicated? Back in the day when I installed a car sterio in my crappy VW bug, it was much simpler. Power, ground, speakers. Of course there was no fancy “powered” antenna or amplifier and I think having a tape deck was the big thing (no need for the match book rolled up to lign the 8-track so it actually played anymore).

Since im thinking there is no powered antenna on the coach and not really sure if there is an AMP, I figured I would simplify things and just go with the basics. Red/Yellow/Black and speakers. Still same behavior? And this is on two units so it’s not the actual unit itself.

I am going to go back and re-test the Yellow (should e 12v live from battery) and Red (should be 12v live when ignition on ONLY) and see what I am missing.
