Do you know if it is stuck mechanically (obstruction) or the air valve won’t shift?
-
It’s a guess but I think it is not shifting, air to cylinder pushing it open but will not close with switch. Also I can push the cover close under pressure, when I release the step cover it will open up. Any ideas?

It’s usually a Mac Regulator like this one mounted in the steering bay. Dick can probably help you.

What Tom is showing in his pictures is a MAC solenoid Valve. Yours may or may not be a MAC, but if you are using a push button to actuate it, there will be a solenoid under the drivers seat. Follow the lines back and you will find it. Once you locate it, you will find it has 3 air lines, one is supply, and the other two are for extend and retract. This one Tom is showing in the picture has built in Flow controls.

I see the device that controls your step well cover in your 1st picture. It is top center.I try to label everything. Here are pictures of mine, Liberty #331.Made by Versa Products.1984 96" with 8V92TA
(remodeled Liberty Coach)

On the Versa, you can push the little red button at each end to activate it. If it operates the step cover in both directions, you’ve narrowed it down to an electrical problem. If it doesn’t, then that indicates an air problem.

Thanks Tom! But Dick first has to help himself.
We have a problem with our air step too. I presumed (notice I didn’t use “assumed” = ass U & me) my problem is with the air cylinder that moves the slide and I would have to get to the cylinder which is behind the pax side Cruise-Air machines. I confirmed with Bill at Liberty that the Cruise-Airs don’t have flexible connections and have to be properly isolated and removed to access the cylinder; which I currently don’t have the ability to do. For me its an ETLC project.
But the picture of that device has me thinking. I’ll investigate more. Maybe that’s where my problem is and the fix is much easier than I thought it would be.
I’ll be reporting back.

My first coach was not equipped with a step cover. My current coach has one which was nice but I have disabled it in the retracted position.
My concern is emergency egress from the coach, possibly at night in darkness without electrical power or air pressure in case of whatever. One more hurdle.

I found the Versa valve (Kgg-4232-24vdc) remove and cleaned. Installed and had the same problem. Let air out and moved the spool to the opposite side. The Step Cover Slide stayed in. I used the switch to move the Step Cover Slide out but just like before it stayed out. Had to remove air and move spool to opposite side to keep the Step Cover Slide in. Is it possible the coil is bad?
-
That is a double solenoid valve which requires two independent 24 vdc signals. One for extend and one for retract. I would mark and pull the two air lines from the valve, then test it via the manual overrides, and the electric switch on the dash. If the valve is functioning properly, time to move to the cylinder. If the valve is not functioning properly, you can now look at the valve and the switch.

Ordered new Versa valve (KGG-4232-24VDC) will be here in 5 days. Will install new valve with coils and hope this does the trick. At this time I don’t think its the switches (Switch on dash and Switch by passenger door). If the valve and new coils don’t work that will be the next place I go. Will update after valve is installed. Thanks for all of your advise, would not be this far without you.
Question:
If I have a bad coil can I reverse the coils to see if valve works in opposite direction?
-
I switched the coils on the valve and the step cover slide would not open. That’s a good thing. This is telling me that the coil is bad. What do you guys think? I am sooooo close to the finish that I’m going to have a beer. Well I was going to have a beer anyways.
Does anyone know why Don’s valve has 2 wires and mine has 3? The 3rd wire on each of my coils are green and go to the chassis.
The new coil does not have these wires, do I need them?
-
Fred, switching the coils from one to the other doesn’t tell you anything from the troubleshooting standpoint. You need to pull the air lines from the valve and see if the spool is shifting properly via the manual red buttons on the valve and the switch on the dash.
