State of residency for full timers
Alright, the decision has been made. John and I are hitting the road full time in June (my final year of teaching!). We are weighing S. Dakota and Texas for our state of residency. Anyone have any opinions/advice about which or perhaps another state?
Also, I have a question regarding medical care. I know we can make the round back to our “home state” of California to see our current doctors annually if we want to, but when full timers get sick, do you just head to the nearest urgent care center? We are retired military . . . do we just head to the nearest base? Then again, without my 148 kids I see at work each day, maybe I won’t get sick as often!!

We were full-timers for just under 10 years and Florida was our state of residency.
Florida has no State income tax, has a really good absentee voting system and very reasonable premiums for both auto insurance and health insurance.
Worked so well while we were on the road that when it can time to hang up the keys and buy a house, Florida is where we stayed.
Full-timing in a coach is the experience of a lifetime that you will treasure forever.

No sales/use tax if registered out of state more than 6 months.
No annual vehicle inspections. This can be a pain for full timers if required by your state.
When you are ready to go back to bricks and sticks, why not Florida?
Unless you currently live within 40 miles or so from a military hospital and aren’t covered by Medicare, you are covered by Tricare Standard. This allows you go most anywhere. You might consider a supplement to cap your annual costs.

Just a couple of tips that worked well for us….
We found that Verizon Wireless gave us excellent coverage through the U.S. with regard to cell phone and internet service. We used Walgreens pharmacy for our Rx as there was one always near by no matter where we were. Same with Bank of America for banking centers and ATM locations. All of our banking was done on line, and you can automate as much of it as you are comfortable with.
As for mail, we had a mail box at our local UPS store here in Florida. This was our mailing address for everything. When in town, we would simply pick up our mail once or twice per week. Otherwise, they would ship it to us wherever we happened to be and once a month was usually sufficient.
We would take care of our annual check ups while “home” in Florida. Our Blue Cross/Blue Shield policy covered us throughout the country if needed. Luckily, we never had to test that system.

You might want to check out Tennessee.
No state income tax. Tag renewals around $50/yr with no inspections/smog for big rigs. No special driver’s license requirements for private RVs. Should you own actual real estate, the taxes are very low.
Health care around the Nashville area is outstanding. The health care industry in Nashville is massive. Fort Cambell is about an hour and a half away.
Prevost Nashville has a good reputation.
