  • Splendide or Not

Posted by Robert on August 15, 2015 at 4:47 pm

When I purchased our bus four years ago, the previous owner told me the Splendide washer/dryer worked the last time they used it but that was three years earlier. As I was checking out the washer I found that the program selector swich was not working. I took the switch apart and cleaned the contacts. Over the years of non-use, corrision built up and would not allow the contactc to meet. Since then, it has run very well and we have been very pleased with one exception. When it tries to start the spin cycle we need to be ready to move. It starts jumping and bouncing like crazy. We have to stop the machine and try to distribute the cloths around the drum a little and then restart the machine. If we can get it to start smoothly, all is well and it will finish the process without issue.

The last time we were out, something strange happened. When it reached the spin cycle, we were not aware if it, but the water did not drain. In fact when it got to the rinse cycle it added even more water. That is when I heard my wife calling saying the washer was leaking water all over the floor. When I got back inside I found the water level near the top of the door. We spun the dial around and fortunately, when it hit the spin cycle again the pump ran and reduced the water level to just below what you would expect for washing, but that was it. Spun the dial again, more water – no pump. Again, more water – no pump. Before I knew it the water is half way up the door again and still leaking out of the door again.

I do have to say that this is a Model 804 and dates to the original conversion of 1991.

Since we returned home, I have pulled it out and tested the pump motor. Works fine. Now I am now looking at the presure switch to see if that is the gum in the works. Then on to the selector switch and controller board. I think I can chase it down with a little time and effort.

But as I am chasing the issue, I can not help but wonder if I should even be chasing issues on a 25 year old machine. I would think that the newer machines have many more features. In reading a number of posts, I gather that the 2100 has increased spin speed which reduces dryer time but also has a slow spin setting for things like blankets. And the new ones are more energy efficient – always a good thing.

So my question is, am I penny wise and pound fullish for trying to fix this antique, or should I just bite the bullet and get a new unit. And if I should get a new unit should I consider something other than a Splendide like an LG or something else. What ever I get I would want a vented model and I need to get a combo model instead of stacking. (I do not want to loose my only full length closet)

I know that many of you have been through this process, so any advise would be appriciated.

I spent far too many hours repairing our Splendide in our first coach, so when we got our second coach and it had a stacked Kenmore washer and dryer both my wife and I did a happy dance. I hated the Splendide reliability, she just hated the Splendide.

My free advice which is worth what you are paying for it is to get rid of it and put in a stacked washer and dryer.

I really did consider that option, but my wife and I do not want to lose our only full length storage.

Hi Bob, I had to replace my old
Splendide too, it would not drain anymore. I got the new one WD2100XC from a
place in TX for around 9500. It’s been working great. The install was plug and
play. I would highly recommend it. The new one has a vented dryer also so
you’ll have to install a vent line. I was going to try and fix mine but
then I figured if I’m pulling the whole thing out to work on it I might just as
well replace it. I can find the place where I purchased it from if you need the info.

Thanks Fred. Fortunately the 804 is vented should be easy to replace with like model. I have also looked around on the internet and found some sources at around the same price point. But when I was looking, I also saw several other brands of vented combo machines. So I was wondering if the newer model Splendide is as reliable. I know that there is only one source for parts and about as many service techs to repair it. If I went with an LG or other brand, certianly parts and service would be easier to come by. I just do not know if I would need them more often.

So in making this decision, should I stay with Splendide or move on to another brand and why.

Since we are spending your money, I would get a new one for sure.

Really, I think you are right to question fixing a machine that old.

    Good Luck

Well I don’t have anything to compare it
to really. But I can tell you from what I read when I was researching it and
from my personal experience with the 2100XC for the last two months or so it’s
the ticket. They have made many upgrades from the old machine and if you are
like me and really have to have a combo because of limited space I say go with
    Splendide.

Two years ago we had problems with our original equipment Splendide and replaced it with a new one from Camping World which just happened to beon sale. The new one is vented as was the original but what a difference. This new one actually dries the clothes!

Spending your money or mine, I would get the Splendide.

Well, unlike Jon and Di, we had excellent service from our 2007 Splendide stackable washer and dryer. We had them for 7.5 yrs. in our previous coach and they worked flawlessly. I would purchase them again if we needed them.

We now have Bosch stackable’s which are a little different in operation so took some adjustment.

I would get the stackable’s, you can use the shower for long hang! LOL! Who needs a dinette set, put a cross bar up and hang away!

    Good luck,

Well said from a Liberty Coach Owner. Would’nt it be fun to pull into a nice camp site only to see a Country Coach owner fighting with thier full length gowns and slickers just to eat dinner. I am sure that would be a memorable moment that would make it’s way around the internet in a heartbeat. Viral – I think that is what that is called.

I think I will keep my full length closet for my gun and my wifes gowns.

I can easily understand the guns, but gowns? Unless they are camo there is likely very few opportunities to wear gowns. Guns and gowns? Does anyone besides me see the inconsistencies here?

Unless you are not telling us about your tux that is in another closet.

Well…… I did not mention the tux because it has a few grease stains and does not require a full length closet.

To get this thread back on the rails…… I know a number of you have installed LG combos. How would you compare the LG with the old Splendide. Faster, less noise, less power, dries faster, cloths come out full pressed. Comments would be very useful in making a decision as I have no experience with anything but a Splendide.

Thanks in advance for your help.
