Spare fuel pump for your generator?
Have a 20KW Kohler in my coach with 2200 hours that is equipped with a Carter P4070 fuel pump and curious if it would be wise to purchase and carry a spare. Does anyone travel with a spare generator fuel pump? Not sure if I am thinking way tooooooo much! THANK YOU, Jeff…
P. S. – I should have added I do carry a spare gen belt and fuel filters, just no fuel pump

I always did, but never needed it for my bus.
Years ago another Prevost owner needed one at a rally, the one I had fixed his problem.
NAPA sells them and they are very reasonable priced.

I always thought the unwritten rule was – If you carried a spare part you will never need it, BUT if you don’t carry it you will need it.

It is a fairly cheap spare that can be a PITA to source while on the road. Not to mention the inconvenience. For the 30 or 40 bucks it is a good spare to have.

Tom… when yours failed, were you able to confirm it was the problem by touching it and feeling that it was no longer running or did you have to disconnect the discharge side and see no fuel pressure? Or…….?

If your fuel pump is in doubt, apply power to the wires. I carry jumpers but in the shop I have a power source. If it is working when power applied you can hear the fuel pump pulsing, and as fuel pressure increases the pulsing sound changes.
If no sound, or if there is no change in the frequency of the pulses that you hear the pump may not be working.
This way you do not have to disconnect a fuel line and get that stink all over your hands.

I generally carry only items which will stop me. I have had the Kohler fail 2 or 3 times in my ownership tenure, none caused by fuel pump. When the Kohler genset fails, I use the Detroit S60 genset.

I had two fail in 6 months. The pump came from Napa, failed and was replaced under warranty with Jeff’s help. I was at Oshkosh for the Air Adventure and it was about 90, they never fail where it’s convenient, but I got one at Napa in Osh.
The gen quit and suspecting the pump, I pulled the fuel line, hot wired the pump and no pressure. The 2nd time when it failed I could feel a little vibration when hot wired, but didn’t pump. It’s not that big a deal to change, but you have to clamp off the fuel line or it just continues to leak fuel.
Carry a spare.

I carried one for 8 years, never used it and left it for the new owner.
He hasn’t used it yet either. Good to have, if you need it on the road you’ll never find a Napa.
I would usually change mine out every 3rd or 4th service at about 500 hours.
