  • Soot in burner can – Rudy can you advise?

Posted by Chip & Pam on December 18, 2016 at 2:59 pm

i have a DBW 2010. 24V Webasto. The other day I started getting a high pitch Woo sound from the system. It woke me up when the system cycled. Thanks to Prevomans directions, I was able to pull the system and clean the burner can and replace the fuel nozzle.

I noticed that the burner can had a heck of a lot of soot. When I looked thru the back side of the can, where the flame would be, I saw that the ring around the inner sleeve was molten goop. The melted inner ring was messing up the Venturi for the flame. I ordered a replacement can and installed it this morning with a new nozzle.

after run up, the system still sounded off. The woo is still there. I ran the system for around 45 minutes and then allowed cooling. I then open up the box, pulled the new can & I see soot build up in the bottom of can, bottom being where it is relative to sitting horizontal in the housing.

So, the question I have is this: I have good ignition (in spec with the igniter adjuster). I am getting fuel. I have a new nozzle on it. Why am I soothing up? Could my fuel pump be going bad & I am not getting enough pressure? Could my blower motor be at fault? is the motor not pushing air & not creating the Venturi blanket I need for a clean burn? or my fan clutches bad?

I’m full timing it, winter is here & im using the system a lot . I don’t have a lot of test equipment. I’m going to be in a replace & pray scenario.

    Any wisdom is appriciated

    Chip,

My Webasto is laying on my workbench getting repaired. I had a noise at start up and found the clutch getting ready to fail and would slip at start up. It’s a cheap part to replace, about 5 bucks. Also, check your air mixture, that could cause a rich mixture.

Black smoke or soot equals either too much fuel, or not enough air.

Rudy is the master. He will help you cure the problem.

    Jon & Tom

I called Rudy and we discussed the problem. Rudy was a great help on trouble shooting. He walked me thru the system and came up with a possible solution. We are going to go with new bearings. Since Rudy takes calls (even on weekends) & he is also a fellow Texan. He asked i purchase parts via his mentor, Roger. Nowhere else do you get troubleshooting advice and knowledge like this. Since i was buying from Suremarine outta Washington, i have nowflipped my business to Roger. Rudy gave me Rogers website and i ordered new bearings & spare swirler. I bought a few more items as well for later on.

A special thank you to Rudy for being a great help even thiugh i called during the football game. The Texans won!!

Another thank you to Jon & Tom for this forum. As they say: You Guys Rock!

Truk, mine too is on the bench. Inside diameter of the clutch on the fan side is round, meaning the D shape is gone. And it is 50% gone on the motor side. Also the motor shaft is damaged by the clutch. And it will quickly damage a new clutch. So hope I can buy something less than a new motor.

I hope you can also Dan, the price of the motor is crazy expensive.

Got lucky! Googled the Bosch part number on the motor and found a new one on eBay for 90 bucks, no shipping, and (at the risk of provoking another thread) no sales tax. And it includes that half clutch.

When I removed the four bolts that hold the black plastic motor cover, one of them broke in the aluminum housing with not enough protruding out to put a vise grip on. So drill and tap today.

You did great Dan, do they have more than one. That motor is 5200.

No, they just had the one. The next best deal I could find was $272 at Summit racing.com. Based on Bosch part number 0130110005.

I will try to be clear here.

    1) The part number in Tom’s post above, WPX356-516 is incorrect, as it is incorrect on the website he got it from. It should be WPX350-516.

    2) WPX350-516 is the incorrect part for the DBW 2020. It is correct for DBW 2010. The difference is the inside diameter. The 2010 takes 4/16″ (6mm) diameter, while the 2020 takes 5/16″ (8mm) diameter. So be careful when shopping at web site “heat my rv”, because they say that the 350-516 will fit both the 2010 and the 2020.

    3) The correct part number for DBW 2020 is W397-563. And this part number has been superseded by part number 1320044A. They are available at web site suremarineservice for $6.70 each half clutch. Their web site says they have only one left. I just talked to their warehouse and they actually have many, and I got four coming.

So if anyone needs a pair of 350-516, I have them. Apparently the aquahots use the DBW 2010.

here is the final results concerning my sooting webasto 2010 dbw

    i replaced the following items:

    – swirler

    – blower motor

    – clutches

    – bearings

    – fuel nozzle

    – grommets

    – flame sensor

i had to take the webasto unit up to the auto hobby shop to work on a bench. It was too cold and rainy to work at my spot in the campground. With the written directions from Roger & the wisdom shared by Rudy, i was able to get the system fixed.

the system is up and running. No soot. No noise. No issues. we got the system back up the night before the temps went back into the 20’s. Wife & cats are happy.
