Smoking
Guys,
noticed this trip the the generator was smoking more than normal… it’s not like a white cloud but its more than normal and there is more noticeable smell of diesel.
I tried running it for 4-8 hours pretty hard with multi AC units I thought it cleaned it up but it seems to be smoking again. Supposed to leave again for a trip tomorrow…
Thoughts? Is this something that can wait for a week or so?

Hi Bill,
Common with your era generator. If you ran it with little load for a while or your service is overdue it will smoke more.
On my 07 it took 24 hours on a load machine to clean it out.
All you can do is run everything you have for a few hours, change oil if your close and change out the fuel pump. You can get the fuel pump at Napa for about 130 bucks.
It’s hard to run them at full load because you rarely need to and they build up soot and smoke.
Once I finally got mine clean I serviced every 150 hours and changed fuel pump every 3rd service which was every year and a half to control it.

Thanks… I loaded it up like I never had and ran it about 4 hours this afternoon and it seemed to clear it up.
4-ACs 120 v water heater and oven seemed to do the trick.
I will run it hard to WV tomorrow as well.

That’s good. Next time you service it change that fuel pump, it will help.

If mine was smoking like that. Here’s what I would do.
1 run generator to temp.
2 remove fuel filter.
3 fill new fuel filter with sea foam and install.
4 Re start and run 15 minutes.
5. Shut off for 30 minutes. (This is called a hot soaking the injectors and injection pump).
6 Re start run with a full load 30 more minutes.
This is the best way to clean the fuel system. Also be forewarned on the last restart there might be alot of smoke. This is a loosened carbon burning off.
