smoking a bit
The other day we drove rt 70 east through the rockies and the coach really struggled going up those grades , even downshifting. Since then when I accelerate I get a big puff of black smoke out the tailpipe. Any guesses? educated ones or uneducated ones welcome. I have a thought but am holding off on it.

What are you seeing for boost going up the hills?

To be honest Andre I wasnt really watching the boost guage but Im thinking it was around 25 but dont hold me to it. That was the first time going up anything that long and steep and I was still doing better than the 18 wheelers. How are you and Anne doing with all that rain?

We are in Maryland right now. Things are going good, visiting family and grandkids. Ann says get Larry Bird to flap his wings faster when going up hill.
25 pds of boost sounds like enough, you just have to manually downshift to keep the boost up and depending on the hill 55 MPH in 4 grear might be as good as it gets. Once it shifts into 5th or 6th you lose rpm and boost and speed. On some hills if you downshift to 5th and keep you speed up you can do better then 55 MPH. Get behind a slow truck and lose speed and boost and you are toast.

Gear down and keep the rpm’s up Red, assuming your getting boost.

if you are still at higher altitude the puff of black smoke is common. The higher you are the more smoke. Our bus does the same but clears up when we get lower. The boost will not be as great at 9000 to10,000 feet. Not as much air. Watch the trucks and see that most puff a little smoke at each gear change in the mountains.

However, keep an eye on your boost. I think that version of DDEC only supplies fuel in proportion to the amount of boost to minimize or prevent the black smoke. Maybe Ken can jump in here with his knowledge of DDEC.

All DDEC engines control the amount of fuel going into the engine
using several factors and boost pressure is one of the main controls.
It doesn’t seem to be the only controlling factor because when your CAC,
the rubber boots or plumbing leaks you notice a loss of power and sometimes a
little extra puff of black smoke. The loss of power is because there is
not as much air (boost pressure) entering the engine and the ECM
reduces the fuel. If boost pressure was in 100% control there would be no
black smoke.Red If your coach seems like it has less power than it had on previous trips check your CAC system for leaks.

Thanks for the help gang. I was thinking cac but was hoping for something cheaper. Oh well maybe I will win something big over at deadwood tomorrow (yeah right ) . Gonna have to stop by Mr. Rowes place on the way back east., Thanks again.

A cheap easy way to check the CAC is to spray soapy water on the edges and see if it bubbles up…mine did it big time at idle. That would at least give you an idea if it is bad….

Red’s is the stacked CAC and I believe most of them have been bullet proof, but wouldn’t hurt to check it.

Gee Tom does that mean no ? Ah well . Hey we got back from deadwood (making donations again at the casinos) and our coach was missing ! well not really missing just hidden behind this big honking 18 wheeler with Liberty plastered all over it. Ive lost my view of the hills now. I got a horse trailer on my other side too which leads me to believe that someone must have put the word out on me to the desk people here. Lets see now, who was here before us HMMMMMMM . Worst part is that the guys from liberty say they dont have any parts that would fit my little American. its still nice here ,view or no view. Does this qualify as thread creep ?

Surely you didn’t ask the Liberty service truck for parts, gasp, you only have an American man!
Great place, have you visited Keystone and set on the second floor of the saloon and watched the street activity? Beers were only 2.50 a week ago, but prices probably went up for bike week. Also, don’t miss the Full Throttle in Sturgis, you’ll fit right in with your Viper jacket…. Ahh, you may want to think about that.:)

Why would I ever hex a fellow ex-masshole?
I was more worried about drinking the stacker kool-aid and ended up spending another $50k on a trailer, that I packed my stuff in the dead of night and skipped out of town, only wishing red the best of luck that he got out of there without ending up with a rolling garage 🙂
