  • Smoke gets in your eyes

Posted by John on June 23, 2013 at 1:47 pm

During my pre flight, with engine running I noticed a small amount of smoke coming out of the drivers ac compressor clutch. That smoke increased while I was watching and I hit the shut down button on the engine.

Now I have had things with air con for years but this is the first time that I have ever seen a clutch burn down, they either work or they don’t and the later is a very common problem, at least for me. I will pull the clutch unit off and replace it but for some reason I think that this could be a minor issue that could go major in a New York minute. Thankful I caught this before I hit the interstate with a cherry red a/c clutch, followed by belt failure and who knows what.

    Any ideas, solenoid, signal…….

This happens when we have to much head preasure ie condenser not getting air flow , expansion valve cloged or poa valve ,,, over charge will also make clutch slip or have you cleaned around it and got oil on it ,, good luck i hope it a bad clutch One time i had one the gap on the clutch was to much and to to move washers around the gap sholld be about the thickness of a match book some time they wear and incress this . You only have to remove the outer part of the clutch to dig out a shim washer and put it on the out side i am asuming it is a york compressor.

Had the same thing happen a couple years ago while on the road, clutch locked up and toasted the belt. I cut the belt off and continued on with gen and roof airs running. You’re going to have sticker shock for the clutch, the compressor is cheap compared to that bad boy.

It may be the compressor going bad. My coach has gone through 2 compressors in 122,000 miles. first compressor was at 60,000 and the second lasted 62,000 miles.

The York style compessors are known to throw a rod due to poor lubrication and it could be yours is starting to have bearing failure making it hard to turn over.

Mine just failed 2 months ago at highway speed while passing through Texas. Had the compressor replace at Prevost Houston. They asked if I wanted a new clutch installed but at $600, I said NO. Compressor itself was either $212 or $224.

When I got home, I opened the compressor and sure enough, one connecting rod end was destroyed with parts of it floating around the crankcase.

I would bet on overcharge or condenser not getting air flow also if everaptor freezes over it will raise head preasure causing slip
