  • Sludge in AH. One for Rudy?

Posted by Andy on January 12, 2016 at 3:28 pm

On another forum (SOB) there is a thread that has been ongoing for a few weeks (still not resolved) concerning sludge in the coolant of Aqua Hot systems, as well as discoloration of coolant. The coach vendor (Entegra) seems clueless on the issue and is requesting coach owners to send coolant samples off to independent chem labs for analysis. Apparently AH don’t seem to know what the issue is either. The other ‘sub-thread’ is that of the coolant itself and which should be used, pink or green. Anybody here with AH that has seen/suffered from the same issue?

I really wish folks would learn coolant color is almost meaningless. At one time that was not the case. But now it appears different brands (NOT TYPES OF COOLANT) seem to dye the coolants to give it their own identity.

The problem goes back to around 2004 when Aqua-Hot changed to pink boiler antifreeze instead of the plain ole green stuff. At that time, people with their heads up you know where starting adding pink potable water antifreeze, the kind you buy at Camping World to winterize your coach. Then, the next bunch of people with their heads you know where starting adding plain ole green coolant not realizing the system required boiler coolant. It went on and on for years and you can imagine what some of the coolant looked like.

I had one of the first Aqua-Hot’s in a 2004 CC that was clearly marked, “Use only boiler antifreeze.”

Rudy can probably tell us horror stories….

For years, the correct GRAS Boiler Fluid was Camco which is pink in color. Now, some manufacturrs are using Century Boiler Fluid which is green in color.

Aqua Hot does not believe the two are compatible and says do not mix them. The Camco MSDS sheet reads better than the Century one.

The folks using one or the other have not reported any problems to me. This has only occurred following the use by some manufacturers of Century Boiler Fluid providing the opportunity to mix them. I do not know what the results of mixing are.
