  • SLOW TYPING ON POSTS

Posted by Archived on January 27, 2016 at 11:50 am

From time to time we experience slow typing when creating a post. We thought it might be our site, although I have experienced the problem on other sites also. We asked our web guru Joe what was going on and the following is his response. I hope this helps if you do experience the problem.

When you are typing the page is already loaded and you are not interacting with the server again until you hit the submit button, so it has nothing to do with server speed.
Most likely they have a bunch of other applications open in the background (chances are they don’t even know they are open as many programs hide in the background), which has them low on available memory…this will make typing slow as ever character has to be stored in memory until the page is submitted).
I routinely hit CTRL ALT DELETE on my Windows machines just to see what is open that I don’t know about and kill them, even though I run 16GB of RAM. Same with my Android…use an app killer program.

Bottom line is it has nothing to do with the server and everything to do with the device you are using and it’s available memory.

Which is just another reason why you shouldn’t use Windoze or Android…!

    Jon,

I’m not sure I agree 100% with your web guy. I run one beefy laptop (I’m a programmer so memory is everything) and with no apps running, all critical services stopped, cache cleared, the slowness is still there.

I suspect its due to the choice of the backend software for the forums.

Tom, I am forwarding your comments to Joe.

Tom C and I are frustrated to say the least. But as issues arise we will keep pounding away until they get fixed.

The slow typing comes to me when I post pictures… it has to do with the compatability settings I think !!

    Tools:

Compatability settings: remove prevost community hit apply… I have to do this to post a picture… then when done I go back and put prevost community back in and all is well.

My laptop is running windows 8.1 with everything up to date… I have always had to do this ????

    Tom & Bill

Go to compatability settings in TOOLS and add prevostcommunity.com ( windows IE that is)

I bet the typing will be normal after you do that…. let me know how it goes.

    Cheers… Diane

Hey Diane, Yep, mine was already set and PC was already added. Its’ odd, as it doesn’t happen all the time. I’m trying to figure out the pattern on when it does, then I can forward that on to Jon & Tom.

    Hope to see you soon!.

That’s good to know Gary, thanks. Our web guy is using Windows 10 and says it’s great.

There are many variables that can cause slow typing, but I agree that it is highly unlikely that the server hosting the Prevost Community site is causing the issue. What I have found over the years is it could be programs running in the background, a update that has downloaded, installed, and waiting for a reboot (yes, Mr. Bill), MS programs that have clogged up the registers (reboot to clear), spyware, spamware, and a host of other things that just make it miserable to type. It can be browser settings, the position of the moon… does not matter what flavor of OS, or amount of memory (to a point). After working with computers, networks, and servers for over 30 years, I have come to the conclusion that there is never only one thing that is causing the problem.

While I certainly would never challenge Jon when it comes to anything related to technology, I’m going to side with Tom & Bill. I’ve changed to Chrome, changled my settings as Diane suggests, but from time to time (notice time to time) the problem continues.

But the problem isn’t unique to the PC website. From time to time it has happened on other websites. Another forum I frequently contribute to uses vBulletin and I’ve experience slow typing once in while. My worst experience with slow typing is on the comment dialog boxes of the online version of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

I suspect its a combination of things interacting together to manifest the problem.

Just for full disclosure, anything I have posted about the slow typing issue has only been a repeat of what our web guy said or emailed.

When it comes to computers I haven’t a clue. In fact the only thing my computer is used for is to type posts making fun of Tom or send emails making fun of Tom.
