I think at one time it might have been aluminum, but that is a guess. Regardless if it is aluminum or steel a proper repair for peeling paint is to strip it and do a correct surface treatment prior to repainting.

Aluminum and steel both have specific surface treatments to prepare the bare metal, and aluminum in particular is a real challenge to get proper adhesion.

I’m speaking from a factory perspective and folks that paint buses and cars may use a different process for pretreatment than what we used.

The roofs of the slide outs are aluminum , just as the shell roofs are aluminum. As Jon mentioned proper preparation is necessary for proper paint adhesion.
