We are working on the bus again! Previous owners installed roof top ac units where the original skylights used to be. We came up with the idea of removing the ac units refabricating patch panels and installing tempered glass boat hatches. Pics of the finished product are attached. The ac unit will now be a basement air unit. I am having the doors of that bay modified for matching ss louvers to vent the system. I will update that with photos when that is complete next month.

I had clear hatches on former coach. I liked them. Wife didn’t like squirels looking in. Nice to open on those just rite days. We ditched the 5 roof tops also. Much happier and quieter now. 35 -40 db on high. What part of country you in? I have some extra parts to share. Bob

We are in SC. When the bus comes back from the fabricator we will be having the roof coated in a tan colored polyurea. It only has to be touched up for uv once every 10 years. We are about to start on the inside next. We gutted the bus down to the studs. The wiring is now complete. Next is the plumbing, HVAC and then the fun part of finishes. Should make for some great pics.

Looks Great Rusty, very clever idea. Would not have though of using boat hatches! What brand basement air unit are you using? Thinking about a redo on mine.

    Rusty,

I had dreamed throughout my entire youth about converting a bus on my own. As the years went by and my energy level and available free time diminished I had to let go of that dream and take the easy route. I have great respect for those that take on a home build such as you Bob and others. I love the home builder section of this site. Please keep us posted on your progress. I can still live vicariously through guys like you! Jeff

I really like the hatches! Great work!

Since seeing the Chief Prevost build on youtube (he put one above the shower), I have been searching for a way to add one to our coach.

Our bus came with two escape hatches from the factory. I forget the brand but they are boat hatches. We keep a patch of reflector stuff and room darkening material in them most of the time because the heat they let in during the summer is oppressive.

We do let the sun in on rare occasions in the winter. The light is streaming in through them today because the temps are Cold but the sun is shining very bright!

Why not a fan with skylight. Have 2 on mine and love them. Can run them in or out as you see fit.
