Shower valve cartridge reolacement
My Kohler shower valve has decided to leak so I need to replace the cartridge. Problem is it does not look like the new cartridge will fit in from the shower side – the cut out in the wood wall behind the shower looks to be too small. The shower butts up to a pocket door which butts up against the kitchen cabinets so getting to the back side looks daunting. I was able to remove a panel inside the diagonal coffee maker cabinet at the corner of the kitchen cabinets but that shower valve is hidden behind the hinge side of that cabinet so is not accessible without removing the whole diagonal cabinet. Anyone know how to do that? It has beveled mirror pieces glued to the show face. Do those have to be removed before the cabinet will come out? Is the cabinet screwed in from above and below or just from above? Sorry for all these questions but I am about at my wits end trying to do something that should be “simple”! Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Jerry, Can you post a picture of the shower valve with the trim plate removed? I have never had trouble removing a mixing valve cartridge from inside the shower. Having trouble visualizing the problem. Thanks.

I had an RV plumber come yesterday to see if he could put in the new parts. His “technique” was to use a chisel and a hammer to cut out all the wood around the unit and then whack the brass cap to loosen it followed by a monster pair of channel lock style grabbers to yank it out. The new plastic handle cap could then be installed seemingly solving the leak issue. I was too timid to bash the way he did. It worked, but I was nervous the whole time.
Now to find out why one of my new inverter/chargers stopped charging a few days ago. No remote monitor on this one so all I can do is look for a blown fuse or something similar.

Be aware for the future that there is a cartridge puller to remove those. . You are very lucky that the valve housing was not torn loose from its mount or the bore deformed. Glad it worked out.
