  • SHOREPOWER CORD EXTENSION

    Friend of mine just purchased a 2006? Country Coach XLII. It’s equipped with a 50DN (I believe this charges the house through a Smart Alternator Regulator V3) and a delco alternator of some sort charging the chassis batts.

    On the way home he experienced a high voltage condition on the house shutting down the inverters and cooking ONE bank of house batteries. This coach has TWO equalizers on the house side which I haven’t quite figured out yet. He removed 50DN belt and made it home. New batteries are on the way.

    I suspect the voltage regulator. I believe the regulator in use is no longer made. Replacements?

    In any event, the first step we want to try is to hook up to shorepower and see if we can bring inverters back on line, etc. No power to extend shore cord. Is there a bypass button of some sort or can I just pull or am I sol as far as extending the shore cord with no power?

    Also, proper procedure for replacing house batts on this coach?

    the 50DNs are controlled by an external regulator, they look like the link below. Usually there’s a screw that adjusts the voltage but if its failed it could be a bigger issue. Mine had a 12v regulator on a 24v 50dn, they make multiple types.

    I’m surprised they removed the belt instead of just removing the field or power wire on the rear of the alternator.

    Odd that it would take out one instead of both house battery banks and inverter/chargers. On older ccs the alternator charged two house battery banks wired in parallel to act as one. One bank/IC handled the drivers side and the other the house side. If alternator over voltage took out one it seems likely it would have taken out both. Look for some other cause like a short in the wiring on the failed side. On older ccs there is a fuse block behind the black panel centered between the two I/Cs. I would sure want to know the real root cause before plugging in to shore power.

    I think I figured out why only one bank primarily overheated. Thw worst heat came at the point the 24 volt feed from alternator joined the first battery. Damage was less as it traveled down the line.

    I dont know how the 2006 was wired but on older ccs the large 50 alternator put out a nominal 12vdc to recharge the house battery bank(s) and the secondary air cooled alternator put out a nominal 24vdc to recharge the chassis battery bank. No combiners or isolators were used. If this one was actually wired with the 50 alternator putting out a nominal 24vdc then the house battery bank would have to be 24vdc so it is hard to see how one part of that bank could be damaged without both taking the same hit. Anything is possible I guess, but it is best to be sure here.
