  • Series 60 surge at idle?

Posted by Roy on April 2, 2014 at 7:18 pm

    Just started.

After a couple hours of running, our Series 60 (1997 chassis) will surge at idle. 500 up to 1000 rpm and back.

Doesn’t seem to matter if we are in Drive or Neutral.

No codes on DDEC or transmission readouts. Temperatures and oil pressure are OK

As soon as we start to roll again, the surge goes away. Will be a coule weeks before I can get it into a shop – Allison/Detroit in Orlando – any comments? – and wanted to know if anyone else has had similar.

When I had new DDEC 4 put in it would not hi idle switch on or off then they went in and changed it then it would hi idle and it worked great on low and hi . Don’t really know if that will help you but that’s what my problem was . Hope that helps Roy . That was on my 1997 Royale last year.

Agreed that the symptoms sound like a Trottle Position Sensor. Mine was doing something similar. The alarm was being raised and cleared so fast tat it didn’t raise any visual alarms and the local Detroit dealer didn’t see the alarms in the alarm history. Interestingly enough the alarms were logged in my SilverLeaf galss dash.

FWIW, Prevost’s price is much less than the Detroit dealer in Las Vegas.

I have seen something similar where there was a very small air leak at a filter gasket. Filter was not installed tight enough and it sucked air…very little, but enough to make it surge. It eventually got to where it lost prime and that is how we found it.

This may not be your issue, but wouldn’t hurt to look…

Thanks guys. I will get it into Allison/Detroit here in Orlando next week and ask about the sensor, I will post the solution.
