I would like to see a comparison test but so far I have never seen one.
I have used Baldwin, Donaldson, NAPA and Detroit but have no way of evaluating them.

Detroit series 60 engine oil filter # 1971 is made by Wix. This part number can be upgraded to heavy duty using 1971 xp which changes the filter paper type inside the can an upgrade for special service applications.
Wix filters over and over have more paper wrap inside the can and will preform removing more trash caught as oil travels in and out the filter.
Private brand oil filters i.e. Detroit Diesel, Cat, are let out for bid based on specifications required by buyer.
So….. buying a NAPA filter #1971 is there best filter with premium components and superior manufacturing.

I was talking to my neighbor that has a diesel shop he is a Volvo dealer and a cummings dealer and he says that Detroit- Donaldson-Fleetguardthat are OEM filters that have to be held to higher standards because of warranty for Detriot-Cummings-Cat . But who actually knows? Detroit # 23530573- Donaldson #P552100 Fleetguard # LF3620

Art,
We are moving towards inside components like , inside paper type, plain flat pleat, number of pleats, rolled with internal filter, micron rating, check valve material type, capacity increase of filter oil.
Micron rating is often the spec private label will request based on service life, engine manufacture specs.
Keep in mind our Series 60 engines mount 2 filters side by side which will trap more trash over our 10 K mile filter service life.
Wix offers filters which increase oil capacity. Not a good idea with the location of our filters.

I used the Donaldson blue filters this last time. Cool technology. I change oil once a year so I am also interested in making sure I pick a filter that will last in that regard.

Art, here’s my list of filters that will work.
DD60 Engine Oil Filters(2)=Fleetguard#LF9620, LF3671, LF3620, Intl#1885920C1, or Fram PH7405A, Donaldson Blue # DBL 3998 or Donaldson standard level # P552100 or Donaldson mid level # P551016, Wix#51971, Detroit 23530573, Detroit Premium DELF3998
I prefer the Fleetguard# LF9620 with Stratapore technology. I have been doing oil analysis for many years and these filters have served me well. Here’s a pdf file about them.

And ironically a dirty filter traps more foreign material than a new one, right up to the point where oil bypasses the filter.
