  • Series 60 misbehaving

Posted by James on November 16, 2024 at 9:38 pm

I have had a ongoing problem for last 3 years with a little hesitation when on long trips sometimes everything is great other times drive 200 miles then engine starts acting up it does it for 100 miles then stops. I would love to fix this problem but don’t know where to start.when driving along engine will have split second hesitation while this happens the tack will bump up then back to normal ,running at 1600 rpm it will bump up to 1800 then back.it will do this mostly when running up incline I have a boost gauge that does not seem to move all this stuff will all of a sudden stop and everything is back to normal.sometimes it won’t happen for 500 miles.i am on 1600 mile trip to Florida and will stay for 5 months.the last 3 days it did it for about 100 miles out of 400 miles a day.if there is somewhere to start I could take part out to maybe rebuild.

could it be ddc 3 controller or turbo ,any help would be helpful

    have 1998 royal

    thanks Jim

This doesn’t sound like a transmission slipping?

maybe the tranny is down shifting from 6th to 5th or the torque converter is unlocking?

You can read any DDEC error codes without a reader. It might be worth starting there.

You can read the transmission codes also.

Click the up and down arrows on the transmission shift pad simultaneously twice.

With engine and transmission codes you should be pointed in the right direction.

You can find the meaning of the codes on the internet.

    Hi

well today on last leg to Florida 440 miles.first 75 miles ran great then it started again for about 50 miles on and off.i pulled over for bathroom break left engine running .took off again no problem for rest of trip CRAZY i think that happened before also.seems to me it is trans problem ,but maybe it is trying to down shift when it should not. When running right it shifts up and down nicely

THANKS FOR ADVICE I WILL TRY TRANS CODE AND SEE WHAT IT SAYS.

Does the ddc have anything to do with transmission

My coach and my previous coach hated being on cruise control around 55-60 MPH. It would constantly shift up and down out of 5th-6th (4th-5th on the ’88) and I just manually shifted into the lower gear and this would eliminate the problem. Once I could speed back up again above 60 or so I could put it back into Drive and once again enjoy the ride.

    Thanks bill

i will try that it almost feels like a shift change but trans gear signal would not show a change from 6 to 5 it is a very short hesitation maybe 1 second 3 or 4 in a row then stop for a while then start again

200 RPMs is typical of converter lock unlock RPM change.

    I’d look there first.

Check your alternator, this happen to me. It was my alternator causing the misbehaving.

Could be wiring, computer programming, TPS or converter. Allison can tell pretty quick with their computer
