Does your coach have an exhaust temperature gauge and a boost pressure gauge? If not I would want those 2 gauges before I tried for an increase in HP.

I have a Turbo boost gauge , But Do not have an exhaust Temp gauge.

I hope you give a lot of consideration to how you are going to reject the heat your engine will generate. You are already going to need to have a near perfect cooling system to pull a trailer of that weight. Then add the heat gain from increased HP and it is probable you will have DDEC intervene to take away HP or shut you down just when you need that extra HP most, which is pulling up a long steep hill pulling 10,000 lbs of trailer.

Before I started screwing with increased HP I would make the coach as perfect as possible spending my money on the really important stuff like new air bags, Norgren valves, brake chambers, tires, batteries, and any other needed or deferred maintenance. Then with the money left over I might think about more HP. or better yet, work on a weight reduction plan. Sounds harsh, but if adding HP was such an easy thing to do with no consequences everyone would be doing it.

You also need to think about emissions. Screwing with an EPA rated engine can cause problems you don’t need. It also may, as Jon pointed out, run too hot and reduce engine life.

I would get all the problems you have been talking about fixed and just run it as is. No need to make more problems for yourself.

To give a direct answer to your question; “what does it take to add horsepower to the series 60 engine”

Get an appointment at an Detroit Diesel shop and have their computer connect to the engine. With their software they can dial in the HP you want within certain limits, depending on the serial number of your engine for the higher HP. The price range for that was around $5000.

Going higher than 525hp might/probably will involve modifications to the engine itself using special crank, rods, pistons and ecu reprograming. Don’t do it!

Detroit will only increase the hp and torque setting on a model P or B engnie (premium ) the G,T and M (standard) they won’t touch the setting check your model number

The Norgen valves , Brake chambers , Air bags are already on the list. My question about HP was out of Curosity mostly. Nothing that I was ready to run out and do anytime soon. But thank You for all the good advise ! I Now need to add A Radiator Flush to the list and Transmission fluid change and check.

I will not be towing anything very Heavy for a long time. I might tow an Avalanche on short trips to work locations. 1-4 Hr drives. But for long cross country trips , I will be considering a smaller Toad I think. I am totally happy with the 475 HP I now have. Some of the Class A’ S that I test drove a few yeary ago just had a 300 HP Cummins , So there is no comparison. Although the Prevost probably out weighs the other RV’s I drove by 10K . But the Prevost is the Cadillac RV for Sure !!!

Hp is not going to help with the towing max hp is set at max rpm the torque is what you are after use your crusie control to achive that
