Satellite Upgrade
Posted by Tim on February 21, 2017 at 6:20 pmPondering whether those who added a Winegard “TRAV’LER DIRECTV SWM SLIMLINE” satellite thought it was worth the cost. My current in-motion satellite is a first generation KVH and I’m not sure whether I should consider replacing it with the satellite system above, or to simply upgrade to a newer in-motion satellite.
For what it’s worth, in the last year, I’ve had the TV on once since I was driving and that was for company enjoying an afternoon football game.

Wouldn’t be without it…seldom use the in-motion…just switch once in a while so we remember how and so it doesn’t rust in place. Have Jeff do it…his mntg method is superior. Geo.

We have the non in-motion Traveler dish which we had with DISH service for their no contract HD month to month service. Cancelled the service about 6-8 months ago because we watch very little TV.
When we do, it is usually a pay per view movie. We can do that much more easily by streaming movies from Amazon on our own time table.
But, I can understand that there are a few people who see a reason for having to have in-motion SAT service.
Must be for the kids. I think, duct tape is less expensive …Ronald

We use the in motion feature a lot because on Direct TV we can get a lot of music options and usually that is our entertainment when we travel.
We don’t use the XM Sirrius through the radio because we already have it with our Direct TV subscription.

We would not be without it. I had Jeff do it on my Legendary a few years ago, and this Liberty already had it installed prior to purchase. I have never even turned on the in-motion system while traveling in the Liberty. I did use it a couple of times in the Legendary.
If you decide to do it, go to Jeff’s and have them do it. It will be done right, and the price will be good as well.

We never activated our Direct TV Satelite as it was a nightmare calling the day that we took delivery on November 3, 2014.
Direct TV could not understand what we were trying to do. I talked to nine people. Finally, our tech got on the phone and got just as frustrated. I decided to end the call.
A supervisor called us back during dinner and I just said that we were not interested anymore. We have a complete system on the roof with receivers that have never been used.
Since we have DISH at one of our houses, I was thinking of going with DISH.
We have always been able to get either cable or antenna service. But, I would like to utilize the equipment on the roof.

I’ve learned to tell Direct TV at the beginning of any conversation that “I’m in an RV” to ensure they know I don’t have a static dish. Since I have a year left on my contract, I’ll stick with Direct TV and will evaluate after that.
It seems like if you could get the in-motion which picks up HD for Dish, as well as SD for both Dish & Direct TV, it may give you more options that the actual dish mounted unit. Plus, there was one recent comment on how an owner couldn’t get his dish down and took some time to figure out how to do that. That’s never a problem with a dome-dish.

Signal quality is never as good with a dome. The reflector is too small in rainy conditions compared to the HD stationary setup. Even a heavy coating of dew in the morning is enough to cause some signal loss with the dome.
The owners manual gives instructions on how to manually lower the dish if it will not do it automatically.
