  • Sanitizing Fresh Water Tank

Posted by David on May 29, 2020 at 6:26 pm

    Hello,

I have read different thoughts on how much bleach to use when sanitizing fresh water tanks.

    Some say 1/4 cup per 15 gallons….thoughts?

Is adding a bit of bleach per tank when using…some have said one tablespoon per tank…thoughts on that?

I have always used about 2 1/2 cups, completely filled the water tanks so all water contact surfaces were exposed to the bleach. Then I ran water through every on board fixture and device until I could smell the chlorine at each one.

Then I let the water sit for about 1/2 hour. I dumped the tank contents, refilled with fresh water and ran that water through the faucets and devices until the chlorine odor was gone or inconsequential. I replaced the water filters then.

At least once a year, sometimes twice. I wrote the date on a piece of masking tape so I had a reminder.

Hmmm. I wonder how many cups it would take to kill coronavirus?

    Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Joel, are you asking how many cups in the water tank, or how many you have to drink?

    I couldn’t resist either.

My owners manual calls for the .25 cup for every 15 gallons, but I always throw in a couple of extra .25’s for my 80 gal tank. I almost always do it last thing on a maintenance day so it usually stays in several hours to overnight. Everything else follows Jon’s procedure.

Does your coach really only hold 80 gallons of fresh water? One of the biggest reasons I want to stick with Prevost is my CC has 165 gallon fresh with appropriately large black and grey tanks. I hope that has not changed that much over the years.

When you fill your tank put a 32Oz bottle of hydrogen peroxide in and it will kill any germs that are in the tank and there will be no taste of the peroxide. I have done this for years because at home we had well water. With city water they have added chemicals to do this for you.

Good catch Bill. 40′ CC XLII — Fresh tank 142 gal, Grey 87 and Black 60. That’s what Covid cocktail hour and posting gets you.

Jon: What do you THINK I meant?!

Joel, since most of us are one bubble off level as indicated by the purchase of a bus you could have meant drinking or adding it to the tank.

After all we have a president that has suggested the ingestion of some weird stuff to prevent or cure the virus.

I’ve noticed that neither me nor any of the other folks that I know who smoke good cigars and sip a little corn whiskey have had the virus. We don’t have much problem with mosquitoes either.

I think there could be something to it.

    One more thing.

Since every time that we fill our water tanks we add, unless we use well water, water from a water system that has been purified and treated with chlorine and other chemicals for making it sanitary and bacteria free. That being the case, it seems to me that we sanitize the tank most every time that we service it so it makes a flush-out with bleach periodically mostly a waste of time, water, bleach and energy.

Please correct me if I’m wrong.

While you may be correct about municipal water systems likely protecting the tank we have been in enough situations where we were on a well, including at our home. For the little amount of time it takes to periodically sanitize the system I likely will continue to do so.
