For those following I have just submitted version 1.1 to the app store for approval. A couple of things with this release:
1. I’ve renamed the app to RV Dash, just to make sure there are no naming issues.
2. I’ve added 4 new gauges/info to the second page, including Trip Distance, Trip Fuel Used, Total Engine Hours and Total Fuel Used.
The spec indicated that several of those values were “upon request” only, however in checking in my coach, they were streaming all the time without needing special request.

A couple of off-forum discussions popped up, which I thought I would share.
1. Tire pressure info with Pressure Pro and Silverleaf –
Currently the app does not attempt to display tire pressures. It is possible that the app could display tire pressures from a system which had a Silverleaf and Pressure Pro integegrations. I just do not know.
For this to work, a few things must all align:
a. The Pressure Pro interface that SL provides would need to put the tire pressure on the DDEC bus.
b. It would need to be in the J1708 format (the app doesn’t yet decode J1939. that’s soon)
c. It would need to be provided in standard J1708 spec format, not a propietary format that I can’t decodeIf those three things all came together it would be trivial to add tire pressure info to the RV Dash display.
2. I have decided to add a DEMO mode to the application. A number of people have downloaded the app, without having the CANpod device. Right now it will run for about 5 seconds, attempting to contact the device, and then put up a trouble shooting dialog.
That dialog will be expanded to have a Demo button, which will then put the app in a mode where it receives it’s data from a canned file (captured from my bus), rather than via the interface. The gauges would work, and without a purchase you could see how the app works.
It would also be beneficial to customers with CANpod, because they could use the demo mode to layout their gauges, without needing to be hooked up to a running vehicle.
I haven’t got that particular piece in the code yet, but will fairly soon.

For those monitoring this thread, I have just submitted a new binary to the Apple Store for review. This version includes the Demo mode mentioned above. If the app does not connect to the interface hardware, you can select Demo mode from the pop-up dialog.
The demo mode runs from a captured data file inside the app, and runs for about 3 minutes. During that time it is fully functional, and you can edit and arrange layouts etc. This can be beneficial to customers with the CANpod, because it will allow them to layout their gauges off-line, without having to be in their vehicles with the CANpod online.
I will let everyone know when the app has been approved and placed in the store. The app itself is freely downloadable, and you may run the demo mode without any further hardware.

I just got my CANpod setup from Ray yesterday. Downloaded the software and was up and running in about 5 minutes. The documentation was easy to understand and follow. I plugged into my bus and it connected right up and worked as advertised. Screens are easy to read, and can be arranged and sized to meet your requirements.
If you are looking for a solution like this, grab it. With the upcoming DDEC code program, this will be a nice addition to anyones coach, and should only get better with time.

One of the great things about our coaches is we have engines with DDEC and that can give us great information about our engine’s health and performance. One of the not so great things about our coaches is until Ray has created his Glass Dash we did not have access to that information unless we had the software and reader such as a Nexiq reader with the necessary software.
Every owner should take advantage of the opportunity to have what Ray has worked so hard to create. With the typical analog gauges almost all of us have we can only guess as the values for temperatures and pressures. We really don’t know all that is going on and when we get a CEL or SEL (check engine or stop engine lights) without a reader we don’t know what the fault is.
And I will echo Mark’s comments about grabbing this opportunity. Ray is one of the good guys that has owned Prevost coaches, and has used his expertise to develop a product owners can benefit from. We are very fortunate to have Ray as a fellow owner. BTW, he did not develop this in the dark. A lot of Prevost owners have been testers of his early versions and have provided feedback so this is specifically for our coaches and not a generic product.

I also received my CANPod hardware from Ray yesterday. Very easy to set up and works great. The only problem is the iPAD belongs to the wife and it sounds like I may have to get another one to use for the RV DASH! But it looks great. Ray has really done a wonderfull job on this app and it will be a great addtion to the bus. Ray’s web site has very clear instructions on how to configure the iPAD to talk to the CANpod. I had it working in less then 5 minutes.

Most of the Trips my Wife and I take require driving 8 plus hours and it’s great when she wants to take the wheel for a while and give me a break. When this happens I am able to monitor all the gauges on the Ipad/RV Dash without quizzing her to read the numbers to me.
Helps keep peace in the family and gives me peace of mind that nothing is out of whack.

I agree that Ray has a very capable DDEC monitoring application. He certainly isn’t alone; Silver Leaf has been doing similiar for years. In some cases Silver Leaf products may be better some users. If you have a Country Coach with a glass dash, I can tell you first hand that Silver Leaf’s glass is a great product. It can monitor and manage far more than what’s available on the DDEC bus. If you just want a DDEC monitor, Silver Leaf’s VMSpc is a cost competitive solution. I have personal experience with VMSpc having used it to capture the history of CAT engine performance to aid CAT in resolving a problem they had with EPA 2007 C-9 engines.
Again, I think Ray has a great product. You should just be aware there are other products out there.

I am sure you are correct about alternatives, but I’m with Tom on this one. Ray is not only a Prevost owner, he is able to communicate and respond to his entire marketplace and has done so. That kind of access and support has value that cannot be measured.

Gil is absolutely correct. Silverleaf is a very reputable company, and has been building their products for a long time. They also likely have additional information available that I do not.
I built my product by purchasing the SAE specifications on the communications protocol, and writing the app from scratch. Unfortunately, I do not have any inside knowledge of proprietary communications that may take place on the DDec bus. Just because of Silverleaf’s long history, I would assume (no actual knowledge), that they might have an advantage in this department.
Although very similar in nature, I am not trying to be competitive with Silverleaf. I think my RV Dash fills a different niche than their products. As several have mentioned, the ability to have the co-pilot monitor gauges is a real benefit, relieving the driver of that duty somewhat, and also involving the co-pilot in the driving.
I think the one advantage I do have is the ability to make upgrades very quickly. RV Dash is in verion 1 right now, however in the week since it’s launch on the app store, I have already submitted two updates for review. I’m waiting for Apple to approve the new app right now. Hopefully they will approve it this week. I would expect over time that the application with change as I get even more customer feedback.
This started out as a personal project for me. Something I wanted to do. But it was suggested by some others that the work would be interesting to Prevost owners as a whole, so I’ve made this available. For those who have purchased, I will do my absolute best to make you satisfied with your purchase. For those who want a different solution, I totally understand.
