Runco Plasma TV Failure
Well, after 11 years it would appear that my 42″ Runco plasma TV is dying. The controller comes on and looks to be operating correctly but the monitor will only power up for about 30 seconds and then shut down. The questions this raise are 1) should I merely replace it or 2) upgrade to a newer, better, lighter TV? There are two units available on ebay. Marathon may have one lying around from a customer that has upgraded. In theory if I switch the unit out my remotes and their programming should still work properly. Switching to a new type TV will require a lot more planning and execution. Who out there has had a similar experience? Thanks in advance for the help.

If you enjoy TV at all the difference in the picture will make it all worth the effort. I went from the original 40″ plasma that two people were required to lift to a 42″ Samsung model that anyone could easily handle alone. My sole reasons for that specific TV was it had current technology and it was the largest screen I could mount in the space available. The extra 2″ doesn’t sound significant but seems so in the coach. The performance difference is indescribable. You won’t be sorry if you choose to upgrade.

I recently installed an LG 42″ LED (2014 model) and matching sound bad in the drop down mount in a Marathon. It looked great. I wouldn’t say it didn’t require a little planning and work, but it wasn’t that hard. This model TV is great. It’s a SMART TV, with very good resolution and refresh rate and priced right.
If you were in my area I’d do it for you.

There’s no way that I, at any price, would reinstall 11 year old technology in my bus. Time to upgrade! Look at it like this: it’s an excuse that the wife can’t fight!

I would like to do that too… what happens with the Crestron system. Can you leave the crestron alone and just use your remote for DTV with the new TV and disregard the Crestron TV part?

Use the new TV’s remote for TV functions and OTA channel selection. Crestron for everything else. Or, have your Crestron reprogrammed.

would the Bose sound still work? my bose is the only sound out of my TV ?

The Bose could work, if the TV has audio out. Not all do and some only have fiber out. Fiber can be adapted. A better choice is adding a soundbar.

Well, I’d say the jury is definitely in and that a new LED TV is in my immediate future. I will keep you all posted on progress. Thanks for the advice.

Isn’t anything repairable any more?
I may be stuck in the 50’s but at least stuff we owned wasn’t put in the trash as soon as it needed a repair.

I had a 44′ Pioneer plasma repaired for a couple of hundred bucks locally.
The TV is several years old but considering what I paid for a plazma 8 or 10 years ago I wasn’t going to through it away. I could buy new wheels and tires for the price of that TV.

Diane , our replacement connected to the Bose in the same manner as the 2002 plasma. The Bose unit worked perfectly except the scrolling screen in the base unit was blank. Bose no longer did repairs on that age unit but provided their new technology at half price. Someone on ebay also does the repair should you ever have that problem.

Thank you too.Right now it all works just fine, but the Plasma is bound to bite the dust eventually and the LED is sooo much better! Almost can’t wait …. mustn’t let Larry hear me say that !!

You know, Charles, that may not be the best way of looking at it. A computer in the 80’s cost many times today’s computers and had much less capability.
That said, I would still want to get rid of a plasma if it is in the bus. They have better blacks as a rule, but the power draw is tremendous. I have one at home that you can feel the heat pouring off of as you walk by. The front one in the bus is also plasma and has been the source of a few power issues in the past. That and the tivoli lights.

Karl, are you going to do it yourself and do the front one as well? Does your front TV drop down from the ceiling like mine?
Gil mentioned a soundbar? Don’t know where one could be installed in the front of my bus with the drop down?
How are you going to handle the Bose part of it?
