  • Route from Greensboro to Knoxville

    wanting to take least downhill route from Greensboro to Knoxville

    one route is I40 through Asheville

    next is 421 through Johnson City

    third route is I74 to I81

    going there for maintenance

    jake brake not working so don’t want to have to be going down hill and heat brake

    Unless you aggressively abuse your brakes you are worrying for nothing. Don’t tailgate, relax, drive the posted speed limit or less through the Smokies, set a target speed and stab the brakes as necessary to drop below your target and when you coast back up to the target speed, reapply the brakes.

    It is long continuous braking, such as dragging the brakes that can overheat them. And for certain do not pump the brakes.

    I live in Knoxville and my daughter did undergrad and law school at Wake Forest. She has since settled in Greensboro. So we have a lot of trips by bus and car between Knoxville and Greensboro.

    The I81 route is our preference. It is farther, but only takes about 10 minutes longer. Less traffic, and you avoid the stretch of 40 through the Smokies. The big problem with 40 is there are often delays due to roadwork, breakdowns or just heavy traffic. It is a pretty drive, but so is 81.
