Roof Top A/C problem
I have 3 Duo-Therm 15000 roof top airs that are 3.5 to 4 years old. Just recently I noticed that one of them was not cooling. Turned it on, took off the top cover and found ice forming on the coils that send cold air into the coach. Also measured temps with an IR gun on the compressor. The pipes that are hot were at 163deg and the pipe that was cold was at 83 deg. The compressor and fan were both running. My guess is that it is low on freon? Can anything be done with these things other then just replacing it?

This can happen in high humidity conditions when you have the fan set to “auto”. Let the unit defrost and try setting the fan to low or, better yet, high and see it it happens again. If so, you are probably correct that it’s low on refrigerant.

Usually icing of the evaporator is the first sign the refrigerant is lower than it should be. Before replacing the unit get a soapy leak detector spray and see if you can find a leak. It could be as simple as the valve packing gland needs to be tightened. Look first for any greasy spots. Before replacing it I would recharge it and see how long it lasts, especially if the leak was a valve that could be tightened.

The roof airs are sealed, if I remember correctly. Try the high fan first Andre like Gil said.

They are sealed but I have used a shrader that I purchased from WW Grainger and recharged them,I have one that I did that to 5 years ago and it is still cooling.

in my royal there were mo filters in the system. Ice is caused by low freon, insufficient air flow or a bad. Expansion valve . Pull tje. Cover and check the inside evaporator coil. Run fan on high if you van. High humidity will not cause a system to freeze u less the coil is below design temperature,

Thanks for all the respones on my roof top air. I decided to replace it and the new one makes much less noise and puts out rally cold air. The old one was making a wierd “knocking” noise and was iceing up real bad. Time constraints and taking the easy way out made the decsion to just replace it.
