  • Roof Air noise and SMX control

Posted by Glenn on June 2, 2014 at 4:35 am

EDIT: this is on an 02 Marathon if my sig does not show up!

Hey all, tried a few searches and read Marathon owners manual but still searching for an SMX manual online to help see if this is operator error or an issue that needs attention.

3 roof airs on an XL2 Marathon 40ft coach. Central or Galley A/C seems to operate as normal, once desired temp reached it shuts off, i.e. fan not blowing. Front A/C keeps blowing once set temp is reached just blowing ambient air. Pushing off kills fan but then starts a loud “humming” and vibration from corresponding AC unit…..if I hit selector switch on driver control panel or dash it turns it off completely.

Rear Bedroom A/C seems to work as central one does except that temp sensor seems to read high, for example it says inside temp is 86 but it is probably about 80 degrees in reality.

Marathon owners manual states they do not recomend using the”manual mode” for cooling so I have been trying to keep things on auto.

    So!

1.) is the noise issue on the front AC a setup issue with SMX or unit problem (it does seem to cool well enough)

2.) Is there a simple way to reset the SMX? (link to a proper pdf manual much appreciated)

3.) Are the black temp sensors easily reset or reliable? (appears three of them, one for each zone of HVAC)

Don’t know what your noise issue could be, but the SMX, especially the one you have is great, controlling all HVAC. You are aware that the SMX controls, 110v heat, Webasto as well as A/C and Heat Pump?

Sound like one of your A/C’s is set on “continuous” and the others on “intermitent.” On continious, the fans never shut off and on intermitent, the fans quit with the compressor and then cycle just like a home unit. I can scan and send you those instructions from my manaul if you want. You can also change the temp spread to solve your 86/80.

    G-Man,

You will have the newer version SMX contols where you double tap for the optional heat sources.

Thanks guys! I was aware from reading the Marathon owners manual that the SMX controls both cooling and heating, but will try and download manual and figure out some more.

Tom, please email me anything you have, I am still a little unclear on how to properly operate it and also use of the A/C select switch in the bedroom (guessing has to do with running on inverter maybe).

So all in all the SMX controls are pretty robust?

Ok, after more searches looks like program sequence was slightly wrong, got some good help from Flight systems, going to try and factory reset all of them and see what happens….they said could be bad triac on front unit causing ac power to stay on

    .

Will report back and hopefully provide a good anwser for anyone who may run into the same issue!

Gman, where does your roof units dump water when cooling. thinking about adding 1 unit in kitchen where Fantastic fan is now. Have 3 cruiseairs under foot but it would be nice to have a least a roof backup. They say they are noisey but I can’t hear anyway.

I will have to look closer, have not been back up on roof yet, but believe they are plumbed down via rubes and drain underneath bus, I think Marathon was pretty slick with how they did it, I will try and take a look for you.
