Roof Air Issue
I have a four A/C coach. The front 3 run great. Rear (bedroom) A/C is giving me problems.
It starts, runs with no fan for 30-40 seconds, shuts down, 30-40 seconds later it starts up and runs with no fan then stops again after 30-40 seconds and so on and on and on. Just keeps on cycling like that.
I am lost when it comes to A/C. Does anyone have a clue what may be causing this strange behavior and is there a fix to try or should I invest in a new unit?

Roof airs? What make/model? Staight A/C or heat pumps?
Cruise-Airs in the bays?

Hi Dick. It’s a 13.5 Dometic Penguin with heat pump. No cruise air.

You don’t mention if the air is blowing. I’m not sure but it may be frozen if it’s very hot outside and you have the thermostat set low. Try turning ‘cool’ off and run the fan only on high for a while. Then try again.

If the fan isnt coming on the freeze probe will shut it down. You need to figure out why the fan is inop. Perhaps fan capacitor.

The best news is that you don’t have any Cruisair units. The solution should be (by comparison) cheap and easy. You need to find out why there is no air blowing as without air everything will shut down. If you are handy you can go up on the roof and remove the cover and see if you see anything that doesn’t look right like a burnt wire or loose connection. Worst case you throw the old one off the roof and put a new one in place. Easy Peasy (as a Cruisair owner I wish I had that option)! No air movement is bad and if you can find out why you will also find your solution.

If your roof air units are original, they definitely could be near end of life.
Do take the cover off and make sure there is nothing keeping the blower from turning. Do be careful up on the roof. It’s a long way down…
It is a good idea to take the cover off annually and clean the unit. Especially if you camp near trees or have to keep the bus parked outside a lot. Insects, birds, other small animals sometimes make homes in them.

Just wanted to take a minute to report on my A/C issue. I finally got the mobile RV guy to the my garage to look at the unit (I don’t do bus roofs anymore). The problem, as Jeff suggested, was a fan capacitor. It was replaced and all is good (for now….).
