Roadmaster Towing cables safety concern
While on a recent trip out west, I was hooking up my toad, when I noticed the bolts holding the safety clip on the hooks lost the nuts on the bolt. I had lost 3 of the 4 nuts on the safety cables (Roadmaster #353) I have about 13,000 miles of towing on these cables.
While the hook did not come off the coach or toad side, I feel the safety clip is important on keeping the hooks on the bus and toad. I literally used duct tape to keep the bolts in place while I completed the trip.
Once home, I contacted roadmaster about my concerns. I had immediate response to my concerns. I felt that there should be a nyloc nut on the screws to avoid losing them.
Roadmaster sent me a new set of cables, and via Email explained what they did to change the nuts to not lose them. They basically used Lock tight, then cut a small slit in the end of the bolt, and split that cut. This way the nut will not get past the end of the bolt.
I have included a picture of the cables with the offending nut missing. If you have a set of these cables, I would remove the nuts, use lock tight and split the end of the bolt. I could not find a nyloc nut that was this small to use. I could not even find a replacment nuts to just double nut the bolt.
I commend Roadmaster for their support on their products and listening to the consumer about issues with their products.

Good post William..thanks for the heads up.
Another suggestion to current owners is set the bolt head on a hard metal surface, bolt head down. With the nut in place …slowly with a ball-peen hammer mushroom out bolt shank end.
This is just another quick way stopping the nut from moving out and off.

With bolts that small, you can just center punch the bolt end as well.
