  • Roadmaster Sterling All terrain

My Roadmaster Sterling All Terrain has a capacity of 6000 lbs. I just bought a Tahoe which weighs 5600 pounds. I’m wondering if I’m a little too close to the capacity of the bar and perhaps I should upgrade to a 10000pound capacity bar. It sounds like air force is the best brake system to use on GM products, I’m curious if there is another system that has worked well with GM products. I’m replacing my ’12 Subaru Outback with 9k miles on it (Standard Trans) so if anyone is looking for a great Toad let me know she’s ready to go…plug and play

Rick, I had the same concerns when we upgraded the toad to a Ram 4×4 Longhorn. I needed to have our Sterling rebuilt anyway, and they allowed me to trade in the Sterling for a rebuilt Blackhawk 2, their 10,000 pound unit. It was significantly cheaper than buying new, looks new, and had the same warrantee.

You might be able to do something similar. Give them a call.

We use the M&G system on our 10 GM Colorado as we did on our previous toad, a 02 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Works great!

    Rick,

I would (in fact, I did) go with a 10,000 lb tow bar. You’re bumping up pretty close to the limit on yours, leaving very little margin of safety.

Personally, I didn’t like being greater than 75% or so of rated capacity to allow for any fatigue that may occur during the life of the tow bar.

Also, we have the Air Force One installed on the Hummer and I’m very happy with the performance.
