The carrier manual (avilable free online) – this version talks about how to add oil

shows a picture of sight glass and where oil level should be, there are two styles, one has markings cast into housing the other you need to refer to manual for “right” level. Also check level shortly after shutting running system down. In a cold idle system situation you can have liquid R134 in bottom of compressor floating up oil up higher and giving a falsely high level reading. The hard part is getting it into the charged system, need an injector which is very messy and tedious if you have to put in a lot

or use king valves and create a vacuum in compressor and suck it in through a rubber hose from the can. The carrier manual has a section on how to do this with a set of gauges, you stick the hose that normally goes to the refrigerant tank into a container of oil, just be careful no to suck any air into the system.
Then there is the issue of where did the oil go, if you had a leak(s) somewhere, you probably lost refrigerant also, and that needs to be addressed. I presume you have gauges and all that, the floating balls are the most reliable way to verify proper charge.
I have most of a full gallon that I bought to add some to my system, but I see you are in FL and I am in OK.

And for you Folks that need a new Carrier O5G 41 CFM compressor , I have one sitting in the shelve out in the barn with double pulley and clutch already installed. Carrier (Corpus Christi tx.) rigged it for my XL a couple years back. Never used it. Email if you need one.

Shouldn’t matter at all, except for pressure relief valves or electric switch type pressure sensors because the 2 gases have slightly different pressures.

R134. Charged with nitrogen at the present. Or was when I picked up.
